In GOF, Ron was the one kidnapped by the mermaids because he was the thing Harry would miss most.
I was reading Order of the Phoenix today, and noticed this for the first time.
Voldemort showed Harry that Sirius had been taken because, through Kreacher, he had learned that Sirius was the one whom Harry would go to any length to save.
