Christmas gift-giving

Apr 02, 2007 17:15

So, I got it into my head at some point that part of how gifts are exchanged at Hogwarts involves placing them under an enchanted tree, and then they show up at the foot of the recipient's bed Christmas morning. Problem is, I no longer remember whether that's canon or something I picked up from a fic. Please help?

Heheh, as that theory is totally unfamiliar to me, and I've read each of the books several times, I think we'll have to assume it's fanon. It's certainly a nice idea though!

Fanon it must be, then. Thanks!

Feels like something that the house elves would do. Possibly they get special owl shipments?

Hmm, good point. I figured the things coming in from off-campus must come by owl somehow, it's just the distributing. Thanks!

Either that, or Father Christmas is real...

But I'm leaning toward the House Elves theory...

A little more credence to Fanon. I found this line while re-reading HBP, Chapter 18, "Birthday Surprises," Page 389:

"He threw the package across onto Ron's bed, where it joined a small pile of them that must, Harry assumed, have been delivered by house-elves in the night."

It's a Harry assumption, and it's a birthday instead of Christmas, but it shows that the enchantment thing is probably a fanon creation, since this is Rowling's only reference to how presents get into the rooms.

I've never read anything about presents being placed under an enchanted tree for Christmas, so I agree that it sounds like fanon (I've only read the books and don't read fanfic).

They do *have* Christmas trees fantastically decorated and the presents do show up around the recipient's bed, but as far as I recall, there was never any kind of explanation of how the gifts got there. Not even saying 'by magic'. They're just "there".

Cute idea, but I am 99.9% sure it's completely fanon, as I read very very little fanfiction (haven't in years), only the books and I've never heard of that before today.

That seems to be the consensus. Thanks!
