There's interesting stuff going on, and I might've been able to appreciate that if my reaction to the rape scene hadn't obliterated everything else. Apparently a lot of other readers have been able to get past it with no problems.

I suppose I saw it as willing-participant sex, with his big problem being how totally it screwed his perception of who he was. I completely agree, if that scene felt like sexual violence to me, I would have liked the book much less.
