Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Gabriel felt the knife through his heart and looked up at his brother. Damn it he wasn’t dead yet! He was going to get his point across to his brother. Humans are worth dying for…and family…family is important…you can’t run from it like he did…but you can’t kill them…
He pulled Lucifer down and to eyelevel, surprising his older brother who looked anguished to even be doing this… Gabriel took a hold of his grace…it was intact so far right now. He wrapped that grace around Lucifer’s and he did something that really shouldn’t have been done… He gave his brother his grace and forced both together. He saw Lucifer’s eyes widen even as Gabriel saw his brother’s vessel heal…the vessel no longer showing the scarring from being burned apart… All this as Lucifer had twisted the sword and Gabriel let out an agonized cry of pain, the last dregs of his grace bursting from him and then darkness…
---
Lucifer let Gabriel slip from his hands and fall to the floor, his brother’s magnificent wings splayed out on the ground. He didn’t get what Gabriel had done…Why give him his grace…? Lucifer prodded at it and tried to separate it from his own grace but it physically hurt him so he stopped after a moment…He didn’t understand Gabriel’s thought process half the time even as Gabriel’s grace seemed to explore Lucifer’s vessel… Lucifer tried to stop it, but the grace ignored him and Lucifer let out a mutter and looked to his dead brother and lifted up his body and buried it in the woods across the street, marking it with his name…
Dean…I can’t kill my brother, came Gabriel’s voice. Lucifer started and looked around when he heard his brother’s voice. It took him a moment to realize it was an echo from Gabriel’s Grace… He poked at his brother’s grace and found just what Gabriel had done, and there was nothing to do to reverse it…Just…wonderful…he was going to have to live with his brother’s grace harassing him… He looked to the grave and sighed.
“You always were the tricky one…” He muttered before he shifted his wings and vanished.
Three weeks passed and he’d just heard of Crowley’s betrayal and then about Bradey’s betrayal as well. Not to mention that Pestilence is powerless, the horseman just having come to him... He dealt with the situation accordingly and had the demons drag off Pestilence’s corpse. Useless Horsemen losing their rings to two humans. He knew they knew about the rings... It was a secret Gabriel’s grace had stubbornly tried to hold onto before Lucifer got the information. ..
The grace…the grace had been harassing him for the past three weeks. The max it will ever stay silent is up to three days… It only reminded him of what he had done every time it even spoke or shifted…Lucifer had a bad feeling it was waiting for something…The only thing it had really helpfully done was heal his vessel and strengthen it from being burned through…That much he’d thank Gabriel for…but that’s it… Lucifer though he…felt worn and it was close to crunch time to head out to Detroit…He already had demons there…
He took a breath and shifted in his chair before getting up. He didn’t want to fight his brother…Not after what had happened with Gabriel…No…He had to do this… Yet Death still had to wipe Chicago off the map, but he still needed to be in Detroit soon…
He went to a large bedroom where he saw a magnificent mirror on the wall and he looked at it and noticed just how…tired he looked…
“You know why that is, right?” Said a voice, loud and clear and Lucifer did NOT start even as he saw his brother’s reflection in the mirror and Lucifer looked back and didn’t see anything in the room but when he looked back to the mirror Gabriel was still there.
“Go ahead Gabriel; tell me you’re oh so wonderful ideas of why you think I feel like this!” Lucifer snapped and one of the lights in the room went out even as Gabriel rolled his eyes.
“You’re scared to go up to Michael, you don’t want to fight him, not really but you feel like it’s your duty to do this... Brother we have free will too you know…” and Gabriel didn’t wait for Lucifer to respond before he was gone and the twisting grace inside him was agitated but then settled again…Lucifer let out an annoyed growl. Yet his brother’s grace kept harassing him and Lucifer tried to ignore it as he made a trip to Sam’s dreams.
“It’s getting close Sam…” He said as Sam let out a yelp and backed away from Lucifer, glaring at him. Lucifer looked around and saw the Winchester was in the Impala. Sam had fallen asleep there apparently or…something, Lucifer at this point didn’t care even as he looked to the spot next to him and then to Dean driving…
Sam frowned at him as Lucifer let his gaze linger at the spot of leather behind Sam’s seat…He could still sense his brother there, even in the dream…
“Hey,” Sam snapped his fingers and Lucifer blinked and looked to him, “What’s wrong with you? You don’t look too good,” Sam said with something that could be concern or maybe he was just making conversation. Either way the human had noticed Lucifer’s expression… Lucifer looked up and looked to Sam and said flatly, “I just want it to be over, I have to kill my brother because of you.” Sam flinched at the tone and then frowned and looked at Lucifer curiously even as their surroundings flickered as if someone had changed the channel and they were standing in front of a trapped Gabriel in Holy fire in some warehouse.
“I didn’t do that…did you?” Sam asks, though seeing Lucifer stiffen he fell silent as Gabriel stepped out of the fire and approached Lucifer.
“I did this and well, it’s about time. It’s nice to see you so…guilty and confused. It means that it’s slowly working…after all, haven’t you been feeling off? More….tired than usual? Have you even looked in a mirror lately? Still, if you’re hearing this, it means the trigger words have been spoken. Tough luck bro, you really did piss me off with stabbing me…So enjoy the ride!” Gabriel laughed and yelped as Lucifer grabbed him by the jacket.
“What did you do?!” He yelled, shaking the messenger form of Gabriel, who just smirked.
“Look in a mirror over the next few weeks; you’ll see what I did…” He then snapped his fingers and was gone, and so was the surroundings, which went back to the impala. Sam was looking to Lucifer who was fuming when the pain started right where Lucifer’s and Gabriel’s grace was fused together… He looked to Sam who was watching him.
“I’ll see you in two weeks Sam,” he said, keeping all traces of the pain out of his voice before leaving the dream. The moment he was out of it he curled up on the bed and locked every door and window even as the pain…oh dad the pain got more than intense as Gabriel’s grace was doing something he wasn’t expecting…strands of it crept into Lucifer’s grace, his grace actually twisting and trying to fight it but apparently deep down Lucifer was longing for attention from Gabriel’s grace as eventually his own gave up and just let whatever was happening…happen. Lucifer’s wings wrapped around himself as he grabbed a pillow. Oh man it hurt so much… He actually passed out after ten minutes the pain was that intense…
He woke to an eerie silence and he stretched and rubbed at his eyes. His grace….it was twisted with Gabriel’s grace and it had become a smooth blend. Lucifer just sighed and got up. He had to prepare for Detroit…
Two weeks later…
The apartment he was waiting for the boys in had mirrors… and Lucifer was staring at his reflection…his eyes and hair were different colors… His eyes were the same hazel that had stared at him and silently pleaded for mercy… The hair…it was light brown and flipped out at the back…He was constantly pushing annoying bangs out of his eyes. Even his vessel’s facial structure had changed a bit… He couldn’t wait to get out of this vessel… He then moved over to the window as he heard a commotion and turned to see his demons dragging Sam and Dean up the stairs….Saw their eyes widen in shock at Lucifer’s appearance…saw the demons die as Sam used his powers.
“Chalk full of ovaltine are we?” He said before he saw Sam’s determined look.
“I want to say yes.”
Of course he did… Lucifer revealed he knew of their plan and that he would do the battle of Sam’s soul and whoever was winner was well, winner. Sam said yes and Lucifer tried to leave his vessel…That’s where there were problems. He tried. He tried so many damn times to get out of this vessel and his rage… it made the building shake before he punched the wall.
“THE SON OF A BITCH!” He yelled, his voice shattering windows and causing the Winchesters to flinch.
He saw the confusion on their faces even as he looked away and realized a large part of him didn’t want to do this…not to mention he’d been locked inside his vessel…
He left the place and in his rage knocked down one of the main pillars and as he left the building was collapsing…
He wasn’t surprised when a month later Michael found him sitting and staring out at the sky from in the middle of a green field…That was one of the things Lucifer had found he’d actually had in common with Gabriel..
“Lucifer?” He asked in a soft voice, using Adam Winchester as a vessel, “Is that…you?” Michael sounded confused and unsure…
Lucifer’s hair…it was exactly how Gabriel’s had been. Hell he looked exactly like Gabriel’s vessel had looked and his grace no longer clearly defined him as well…him…he was just…something that wasn’t quite Lucifer and not quite Gabriel.
“No…I stopped being Lucifer two weeks ago…” Lucifer said quietly, his voice had changed too.
“I…brother I sense you and I sense Gabriel…” Michael said as he sat down and put a hand to Lucifer’s shoulder.
“Well your senses tell you right…Gabriel forced his Grace into me seconds before he died…look at what it did to me…” Lucifer whispered as Michael looked to the wings.
“Your wings aren’t black anymore brother…They are gold like Gabriel’s was…and there’s black on the last half…” Michael puts his hands to the wings and runs his vessel’s hands through them and Lucifer shivers and jerks them away.
“Why didn’t you meet me brother?” Michael asked after a moment of silence.
“I couldn’t take Sam as my vessel…I am trapped…and…I don’t know what to do…I don’t want to fight you but I don’t want to stop the apocalypse…” He left with his hands in his hair and he didn’t know what had made him do it, but he’d appeared where he knew the boys often stayed… He…he wasn’t sure who he was anymore…It wouldn’t be best to be here. Yet after a few minutes of long careful thought he walked into the yard, shifting a tan jacket he’d recently acquired…feeling naked without one…
He saw the Impala there and went up to it and ran his fingers across it silently even as he remembered Dean telling him to stand up to Lucifer… no….that wasn’t his memory…
“Gck!” He flinches as he remembers Gabriel’s death and sees if from both points of view and shudders. Wow, Gabriel really had seen things differently.
“Gabriel?” Lucifer looked up and saw Sam coming down the porch with a frown, “You’re supposed to be dead…” He said softly as he approached.
“No I’m not Gabriel…Not really…” Lucifer admitted and Sam frowned.
“Then…who else could you be?” Sam asked and Lucifer sighed.
“I told you I would never lie to you Sam…I am not Gabriel. Think…back to Detroit-“ Lucifer started to say and Sam’s eyes widened.
“Lucifer!” He yelled and Dean and Robert Singer immediately came from the house with Castiel, all of them holding angel slaying blades.
“Yes….or well I was Lucifer…” He muttered, running his hand through his hair and fidgeting.
“What happened in Detroit?! I drank all that damn demon blood for nothing!” Sam yelled, pulling out his own blade and approached Lucifer who swallowed and eyes it, hearing a screaming Gabriel in his ears… He drew his blade for defense.
“What happened in Detroit was not something I wanted to happen…My brother’s last actions before his death cursed me to this vessel…he left me his grace and his grace did this to me…and locked me in the body…and more.” Lucifer said as Sam actually swung at him and he blinked and blocked the attack.
“You’re lying! You’re trying to screw with us!” Sam yelled, furious.
“I told you, Sam I would never lie to you!” He snapped his fingers and made Sam freeze in place, the Winchester snarling.
“I’m not the same Lucifer you knew…Gabriel’s grace it…changed me, it gave me a different view on things. I don’t know why I came here but…clearly it was a mistake.
He started to leave when he saw Castiel blocking him and looking at him curiously and Lucifer frowned, both he and Gabriel remember Castiel from when he was a fledgling…not to mention their individual encounters with Castiel that year… He reached out and put a hand to Castiel’s shoulder.
“You’re still alive…even with your powers drained you still stubbornly live…What is it about humanity that you find interesting? I know what Gabriel thought of it…what I thought….” He was genuinely curious.
“I could show you…brother,” Castiel said with a uneasy smile as Lucifer thought it over. He looked back to the three in the driveway all of them tense.
“They care for you don’t they?” He asked softly and Castiel nodded.
“Brother I know you have not called off the apocalypse…at least let me and the Winchesters show you why we want to save humanity…If you don’t like it…well we can’t stop you from killing us…” Castiel said softly and Lucifer remained thoughtful.
“I wouldn’t kill you brother,” He said softly and he saw Castiel blink but then the fallen angel remembered the time in holy fire and he seemed skeptical.
“Before you killed Gabriel I might have believed you,” Castiel said and Lucifer looked away.
“That…was one of the worst mistakes of my life…I never wanted to hurt him…yet he gave me no choice. Look at what he did to me as punishment, even in death!” Lucifer ran a hand through the hair and looked back to Dean and Bobby who had edged closer to hear. Castiel frowned at him.
“You’re lucky he didn’t do worse,” He says calmly, “He could have made his grace a ticking timebomb that could have destroyed you from the inside out,” Castiel watched with satisfaction as Lucifer paled, “and yet clearly he didn’t do that. Seems he wanted you to learn a lesson…after all that’s the way he is…”
Lucifer fidgeted, “I don’t want to kill Michael…I don’t want to kill any of my brothers again and I am….hesitant to kill off the humans without seeing just what they can do…besides hate and be self loathing…” Now Castiel put a hand to his shoulder and squeezed it and Lucifer felt a flare of relief even as he saw Castiel shoot a look to the Winchester and Lucifer freed Sam quietly.
“You’re changing, brother,” Castiel whispered and Lucifer wasn’t sure how he felt about that. Yet that seemed to get the others to lower their weapons and slowly approach Lucifer. Dean then came up to Lucifer and eyed him.
“Well…its freaky how you look like Gabriel but…I guess you can tagalong with us if you don’t hurt us…” Dean muttered and Sam looked outraged at this but he didn’t say a thing even as Bobby laughed.
“Guess you three will have your hands full.” He said as he went back into the house and closed and locked the door, effectively leaving the boys out there who scowled and then Castiel got into the car.
“Time to get this show on the road then…” Dean muttered as he got in the driver’s seat and started the car and looked to Sam.
“We had a job we were going off to anyway right?” And Sam nodded and picked up his reports.
“There’s something that might be a job in…oh jeeze, Muncie Indiana…” Sam muttered and they all looked back to Lucifer. Lucifer shifted but didn’t say anything; he knew why they were looking at him. It was where he had killed Gabriel.
“Great…so what is it?” Dean asked before starting the Impala and pulling out of Bobby’s yard.
“I don’t know…it’s not something I have seen though...People are just being found stiff like a statue and staring in front of them with expressions of horror…” Sam muttered and Lucifer leaned back. He knew almost instantly what it was but he wasn’t going to make this easy for them…
Lucifer was awake for the whole time, but he’d look to Castiel, asleep in the back seat, and Castiel’s head was leaned against Lucifer’s shoulder. Lucifer had noticed the boys pale when that happened and when he had gone stiff for a moment, but he didn’t say anything and relaxed, wrapping an arm around Castiel’s tired form at the time, and the fallen powerless angel looked at him with bleary eyes and when Lucifer gave a very small smile Castiel got comfortable and fell asleep fast..
They crossed over to Indiana after twelve hours on the road and then they were about to pass the Elysian fields motel when they for some reason saw a white horse trotting along the side of the road along the treeline and there was a magnificent red-orange bird perched on it’s head. There was an intake of breath from Lucifer and he vanished from the car to appear outside of it and in the other lane right as they got close to the driveway of the hotel and Dean was forced to park harshly in a spot before Castiel, Dean and Sam were getting out of the car as they helped Castiel who looked like he’d just woken up… Lucifer was watching the horse and it paused and looked to him and gave a soft snort and Lucifer swallowed and approached and the horse stiffened as Lucifer got close and then the horse seemed confused for a moment before it let him pet it.
It then shied away.
You are not one but two… A whispering voice and Lucifer nodded, knowing it was the horse that spoke.
You smell of death and hatred and yet…you also smell of love and sacrifice, and you have wings, like my cousin…And of that we come to pay respects to…come… The horse whispered before there was a shining light on it’s forehead and a horn was visible and the unicorn started to move when it stopped and turned it’s head and pressed it’s horn to Lucifer’s forehead.
You were once a being so full of love…Morningstar. You should be able to experience that again… Lucifer swallowed again. He hadn’t met a Unicorn since he was cast from heaven…there had been these beings in Heaven and this must have been one of them that remembered him…How he used to be…
Your brother gifted you with a new viewpoint…I shall add onto that. The Unicorn’s horn grew bright and that’s when Lucifer remembered one of their main powers…to cleanse ANYTHING of evil and corruption…
He didn’t remember his screams of agony, or collapsing…or being helped onto the Unicorn by Castiel and Dean…the only thing he remembered was being in front of his brother’s grave and falling to his knees and just…letting it all go, the sorrow he’d held onto since that night… The Unicorn snorted and looked to Castiel and watched as the younger angel went to the marker and then looked to Lucifer who looked so broken.
“I didn’t want to kill him,” He whispered after a long moment, his eyes closed and his hands against the marker, “He…he forced me to attacked or be stabbed. He…he really was going to do it…for humanity…for you three…” He whispered and Castiel put a hand to Lucifer’s back, right inbetween where his wings are. Lucifer shivered and Castiel immediately brought his hand away as if fearing some sort of punishment. The Unicorn watched quietly for a long moment.
He lives in two places, Morningstar, It says, pawing at the grass with it’s silver hoof.
Lucifer looked up and to the Unicorn.
“Where?” He asked it, his voice clear and cut through the still air like a knife.
Much of him is inside you, but his…soul if that is what you call your being that is not Grace…still wanders this land, lost and alone, searching for that which he has lost. He gave you his memories and his power but not his soul. I know not where he wanders but you should be able to sense him when you are near.
The unicorn then snorted and the Phoenix let out a hum and suddenly Lucifer was holding a glass and the phoenix was crying into it. When it was done it left with a soft press of wings.
“Um…okay…what the hell was all that?” Dean asked, eyes wide.
“It seems my father’s creatures have taken pity on Lucifer…” Castiel muttered as Lucifer got up and suddenly they were all in the car and Lucifer was silent the rest of the car ride into Muncie…
