1. Fatal Encounter

Doojoon

“Cheers! For our success!”

They laughed, clinking their sodas together as the car sped on. Junhyung, who was driving, gulped down his coke. “Who would’ve thought we’d win that band contest!” he exclaimed, gesturing the one beside him, Hyunseung, to pass him another can.

“It’s probably because of my voice” joked Dongwoon, earning a smack from Kikwang. “Don’t be so proud” Kikwang said. “Besides, my dancing also got us to the top!” They all laughed, talking together all the way back to Seoul.

The five: Doojoon, Hyunseung, Junhyung, Kikwang and Dongwoon, formed a group together. And recently they were invited to join a competition away from the city. Enthusiastic as they were, they joined and, with great efforts, they won.

After a few hours, a light drizzle started to pour down. “Fucking.. Oh great” Doojoon said, exaggerating. “Why rain now?” Dongwoon patted him on the back. “Relax, hyung, its only rain.” But that statement was quickly wiped away as the sound of thunder sounded almost immediately after Dongwoon had said it. Hyunseung grimaced, turning to Junhyung. “We better stay off the road, looks like a storm is coming soon.”

Junhyung huffed, “Easy for you to say, we’re in the middle of nowhere! Damn, why does the competition be so far away from Seoul?!” They drove around, going through twists and turns, and finally, they spotted something.

“There!” Kikwang exclaimed, pointing at what looks like an old building. There was hesitation in Junhyung’s face, before it was wiped away when the rain started to get harder. “Well, I guess that would do” Junhyung said as he drove the car to the motel. They went out the car, grabbed their things from the trunk (which was a lot, since they did come from a band competition), and hurried inside.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

They entered the motel, wet from the rain which has now gotten stronger.

Doojoon was the last who entered, scrunching his nose as he did. It had a dark setting, probably because no one ever visited here. The walls were peeling off, the floor creaked slightly when you stepped on it, and the chairs had a layer of dust on them, all to be completed with the depressing sound of the rain, sometimes accompanied by loud roars of thunder. The whole atmosphere seemed unwelcoming. They all groaned, dropping their bags on the floor. “What’s with this place…?” Junhyung muttered, running a hand through his wet hair.

“Welcome…” A soft melodious voice said from behind him.

Doojoon jumped at the sudden voice, gasping as he turned around. There stood before him, a man who looks just a bit younger than him, eyes slightly closed. His skin was so pale it was almost pure white, and his hair was tinted blonde that was almost as pale as his skin. He wore an eye patch (a medical eye patch to be exact) on his left eye, and his other eye had slight dark circles around them, as if he hadn’t slept in days. He had his hands clasped together in front of him, head low, and Doojoon could only think of one word.

Beautiful...

The boy’s eyes gently opened, irises turning ever so slowly to face him, and the moment their eyes met contact, Doojoon had shivers going down his spine at the never ending coldness in those eyes.

Coldness, but the amount of innocence in it was just as much.

Doojoon didn’t know what to do, except stare back. The other kept his gaze, face showing no sign of emotion.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a click resounded in the air, grabbing everyone’s attention. Almost immediately after the click, another tune started fading into place.

London Bridge is falling down… falling down… falling down… London Bridge is -

Everyone cringed at the tune. It was slow, and had a slight depressive feeling to it. The sound cracked and sounded rough, not at all like a happy nursery rhyme. Doojoon blinked, turning to look at the boy behind him. He was no longer looking at Doojoon, but he had his eyes cast down again, as if afraid to look at anything.

…my fair lady…

The tune stopped abruptly and at that moment, thunder roared in the sky.

Goosebumps…

“Doojoon hyung, let’s go” Dongwoon called out to him. Doojoon shook his head, rushing over to the others who were at the front desk already. There behind the desk sat a middle aged man, probably around his 40's, slouched in his seat as he twirled a cigar around his lips.

“Um… Good afternoon sir… We’d like to, um, stay… here, for the night or so?” Dongwoon said, nervousness creeping up his spine as the old man stared at him with cold, merciless eyes. “Well, of course you did, idiot.” The old man said, removing the cigar from his mouth to blow smoke to the five’s faces. Dongwoon scrunched his brows at the somehow insult, opening his mouth to retort when Doojoon suddenly cut in.

“Well, can we have a room to stay in?” He asked. Junhyung nudged him in the side. “Doojoon-ah, seriously, one room? At least make it two. Besides, me and Seung need some private time” Junhyung said, causing Hyunseung to turn red beside him. Doojoon sighed. “Fine, make tha -“

“Three!” Kikwang piped up. “Woonie and I here need some space too, hyung.” Doojoon rolled his eyes, mumbling something about ‘it’s my money’. “Three rooms please” he said to the old man. “How long?” the man questioned, the loud typing sounds from his typewriter echoing through the air.

“Well…” Doojoon answered, look outside at the rain, which has somehow gotten stronger. “I guess until the storm goes out” The old man grumbled, proceeding to open a drawer and dig out three keys. “Rooms 4, 5, and 6, second floor” he said, tossing the keys which Doojoon caught. Suddenly Doojoon remembered their bags which they had thoughtlessly dropped on the floor. “Oh, our ba -“. “No need to worry. We’ll take it up for you” the man cut in. Doojoon nodded, heading towards the staircase.

Soon, after the five have gone up the stairs, a mysterious smile crept up to the young boy’s face.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Doojoon entered his room.

He cringed once more at the quality of this place. The room was equally shabby and depressing as the lobby. He went over to the bed, which looked very uncomfortable. He gave it a pat, the layer of dust spreading in the air. He scrunched his now. He really hopes that the storm would end soon.

He figured he should go over to the others first.

He went to the door, opening it -

There stood the boy from earlier, hands on the side and eyes staring at nothing. “A-ahh…umm…many I help you?” Doojoon asked, feeling uneasy at suddenly seeing the younger in front of him.

“Your luggage” he said, voice still as soft and melodious as when he first saw him. Doojoon looked over the boy, seeing their luggage safely and neatly arranged. “Ooh…wow umm…thank you” he said. The boy didn’t bother to reply, he just turned around slowly and walk down the hall to the left. Even though the hall wasn’t that long, it was still eerie and dark in the end.

“Oh, hey wait!” Doojoon called, stepping out of his door. He suddenly felt interest for the boy, like there was something for him to know. Like there was something he knew The boy stopped walking. “What’s…” Doojoon hesitated for a while.

“What’s your name?”

The boy was quiet for a moment, before he spoke out.

“Yoseob” He started walking again.

“Yang…Yo…Seob…” he chanted just before he disappeared in the darkness. As he did, Doojoon realized -

The only staircase was on the right side of the hall.

Doojoon blinked, he stepped out fully, looking and seeing that his room was the last one in the hall - Junhyung’s and Kikwang’s room was on his right… which meant that there weren’t supposed to be any more rooms to his left. So if he had the last room of the floor, how come the hall kept going?

How come the boy, Yoseob, was going there? There wasn’t anything there… the stairs were on the other side after all.

Unless…

Unless something else is there, hidden.

Whatever it was, Doojoon wasn’t sure if he wanted to know or not.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

“Well, at least the food here is okay”

They were all gathered in what was supposed to be the motel’s eating area. They were all in a round table, a small, flickering light bulb being the only light source. It was silent, nothing heard except the clanking and scratching of their utensils and the occasional roaring of thunder. Kikwang continued his rant.

“I mean…the shower barely works, the room itself is dirty, not to mention that the bed is covered with a bazillion layers of dust!”

“Yeah, the bed creaks a lot too” Junhyung added. “Annoying if you ask me…because now me and Seung can’t - “ The rest was left unsaid as everyone made a sound to cut him off. It was mostly of irritation or anger, but it was a sound of embarrassment from Hyunseung, who then slapped Junhyung on the arm.

"This place is creepy!” Dongwoon whined as the lights kept flickering. Kikwang rolled his eyes. “Don’t be such a baby, it’s all because of the storm”

A loud roar of thunder echoed, then the lights flickered off.

“More water?”

“GAH!” Kikwang shrieked at the voice behind him. The lights then flickered back on, revealing a young woman, who was standing behind Kikwang with a pitcher of water. Dongwoon chuckled “Look who’s a baby now” Kikwang glared at Dongwoon before looking back up at the woman and smiling brightly. “Oh sure!”

The girl smiled back as she refilled his glass. “Sorry about the electricity, it isn't usually like this, it’s only because of the storm.” Kikwang nodded, “Mmm, don’t worry about it… Thanks” he added as the glass was full again.

“Oh…so…you work here?”

She nodded, a small smile on her face. “Yeah…my dad’s the head chef here…right now our family’s kinda in debt…so it’s the only place we’ve got”

Doojoon stared at their conversation uninterestingly. Sighing, he turned to find something else that might catch his attention. He blinked as his ears then caught faint music coming from somewhere. He tried to look for where it came from.

Falling down…falling down…

…my fair lady…

Lightning spread through the room, filling it with brightness for  split second.

And there he was.

Doojoon’s eyes widened.

The boy from earlier - Yoseob - was seated in the far corner, on an old, worn out stool, in the room next to the place where they were. There wasn’t any door leading to the room to where Yoseob was, just a wide opening, which made Doojoon see Yoseob but not the entire room.

His eyes, as usual, still remained downcast. His hair was shaggier than when he last saw him, which dropped a little to the left side of his head, covering most of his eye-patch. In his hands was a doll. The doll had a white dress on it - except that it had red scratches and marks on it. But the rest lay flawless. The skin was smooth and fair. It’s raven black hair flow down softly all the way to its waist, Yoseob fiddling softly with its hair. But what caught Doojoon the most was the expression on the doll’s face. It was s sad So…empty…it was as if you could almos fee it suffering. Doojoon shivered a bit, looking up -

Yoseob was looking back at him.

Doojoon immediately felt uneasy. It was like something suddenly hit him on the head, making him feel dizzy all of a sudden. His head hurt, like something was trying to get to his head, but he doesn't know what. He tried to shake it off a bit as he turned back to the others. After a while he looked back to the place where Yoseob was -

He was gone.
