Colby stepped cautiously into the familiar house. He heard the crunch of glass underfoot and his stomach churned. Disorder reigned in the normally immaculate home. There had been a struggle, and to spite himself, his lips twitched for a smile. That was just like Callie. She would not give in without a fight.
He walked further, knowing the way as he searched for Don. Turning a corner, he watched ERT retrieve a bullet from the wall. He swallowed hard, but kept walking. A few more steps and he was in the doorway to her bedroom.
He saw sunlight cascading through the back windows… he saw her red hair spilled out behind her as the sheets of her bed hugged the curve of her hip.
In the blink of an eye, the memory faded… leaving agents with flashlights as another bullet was removed from the railing outside the shattered back door.
“Hey Colby,” Don breathed, taking off his cap to run his hand over his hair. “Hey… are you okay?” he asked, noticing the unusual expression on Colby’s face.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he lied, his stomach churning again. “What happened?”
Don grimaced, “The neighbor heard gunshots. LAPD responded but no one was here. ERT is working on a tire print…”
“And… Walker?”
Don looked curiously at Colby before he answered. “For now, we’re thinking she was taken by whoever did this…”
Colby nodded. That meant they had no evidence to prove otherwise. There was hope in that.
Before Colby could say more, the sound of Don’s phone cut through the room.
“Eppes.”
“She’s working for us now, Eppes. Perhaps it would be wise to work on our demands. The toxin won’t just leave welts the next time we release it.”
Before Don could signal for a trace, the connection was lost. [
