He watched her standing poised in front of the room. She spoke of bioterrorism, of risk, of solutions. She spoke with confidence, a cool exterior that only he could see through.
Fire. That’s what she was. She was fire in human form.
He felt the warmth of her radiating around him even with the distance that separated them. And he wondered over these chemicals between them. How had he denied it when he left her that morning weeks ago?
The war room was clearing out, but he made a point to linger. She’d been forced to act like she didn’t know him. Would she still play the game if it were just the two of them?
“You didn’t tell me you were a fed,” he said leaning back against the table beside her, arms crossed.
“You didn’t ask,” she replied without looking up as she gathered her things.
He took a step closer, his voice lowering to little more than a whisper. “To be fair, most of the night I had my mouth full.”
Instantly, she looked up. Those green eyes flamed to life, meeting his… and then, she smiled a knowing smile through lowered lashes.
“Callie…” He was absently reaching for her, watching as his nearness caused her skin to flush red as it had that night.
“Granger, we have an ID on our victim,” David barked sticking his head into the room, interrupting the moment.
“You better go,” she spoke, her attention returning to the bag in front of her.
He opened his mouth to say something… anything to make her look at him, but there didn’t seem to be any words. He pushed himself away from the table, casting a glance at her over his shoulder. She didn’t look up… not until he was already walking away. [
