So my Ubuntu discs arrived today: ten x86, one PowerPC and one AMD64. Each of the attractive cases has a LiveCD and an install CD, and the LiveCDs also have some open source Windows software on them. Unfortunately, sticking a LiveCD into my laptop results in a GRUB error 21. Not a particularly good start... I guess I'll try it on the desktop at ( Read more... )

So, after several days of insane struggles and things totally failing to work, I finally managed to install Linux on my little Toshiba Satellite. It was a P266 with 32Mb RAM and a 4Gb HD.

I've had Debian on Razor (my main computer) for probably a year now, dual-booting with first Win2K then WinXP. I've hardly used it. A few days ago I decided to give Gentoo a go.

Apparently going through the hundred-odd third-party extentions to Mozilla Firebird and installing the ones I liked the sound of (maybe fifteen or so) wasn't the best idea in the world. Now, for some reason, Firebird on Linux doesn't appear to want to work any more. It'll launch as root, but not from my own user. I would try and find the program ( Read more... )

My computer arrived a couple of days ago. It had Windows 98 on it, which was immediately overwritten (after some weirdness involving incomplete install disk downloads) by Debian. A bit of stuff has happened since the last time I updated...

For one, gigcontrol.co.uk now runs on a mix of PHP and HTML - most of the pages are static HTML, but the header images are generated by PHP (the little mini pictures up top are random out of a set of 24 or so ... it's pretty cool =) ) and the front news page takes its HTML from a source ( Read more... )
