So, after several days of insane struggles and things totally failing to work, I finally managed to install Linux on my little Toshiba Satellite. It was a P266 with 32Mb RAM and a 4Gb HD.
From what Ewan has told me, you cannoy pass into 4th year if you still have outstanding classes from 2nd year. As long as we pass A&C 3 (and 4, for me) before finishing 3rd year, we're sorted.

I chose Knoppix because it's Debian-based, and I already have two machines which run Debian.
The small footprint looks nice, though - the install on the laptop appears to be taking up approximately 1.6 Gb o.O
