Bypassing the whole LONG story, Gaara has an alter ego who just happens to be a sandy badger. Literally. The badger is Shuukaku.

When Gaara was a wee baby he had an insanely powerful demon (Shukaku) sealed inside of him who happens to take the form of a badger. Bad news: the seal wasn't very strong and Gaara's not very mentally stable so every so often Shukaku comes out to play and it is not pretty.
