Kei as a Person
I'm playing Kei at about 17, although that's a little flexible. He's technically 16, but I felt that was a little young. Not that it makes too much difference.
I'm playing Kei at about the mid point in the story, or just past. At this stage, Kei is still an impossibly perverted, socially awkward, introverted, lonely, virtually friendless guy. He's generally able to carry on a conversation but has a "twitch", where he can't always keep his hands to himself or control his perversion. He does have a girlfriend back home, but being away from her, he's quick to remove himself from the emotions. (Izumi's presence will change this somewhat, but that remains to be seen.)
He lives alone, and has little to no contact to his family. He's quiet, and VERY disconnected from the real world (this includes most of camp). He's not disconnected in a sociopathic sort of way, but in the sense that his level of cynicism and apathy are so defined that things are relatively unreal for him. Large occurrences can be ignored, and sympathy and empathy are almost void. He gets over things alarmingly quickly, and operates in a survival sense. He does what he needs to to get by, and unless others are directly involved in that, he's quick to mentally shove them off. It's the ultimate in egoism; it's not that the world revolves around Kei, he IS the world.
The exception to this is Gantz, where none of the previous paragraphs apply. Kei comes alive in Gantz, and even comes to take a leadership role. He's extroverted, take charge, and highly skilled. His social awkwardness becomes something of the past, and he is able to truly shine. It didn't begin this way, but game by game, he's become more and more numb to the real world, and more and more in tune with Gantz to the point where he's more real in this false reality. He tells himself he wants to be free from Gantz, but in reality, he's at his best there, and as much as he likes to distance himself from the mentalities of Nishi and Izumi, it's becoming more and more a part of his personality. To survive in Gantz one must be somewhat unstable, after all.
Kei in Camp
He's kept to himself to the point where he doesn't even usually sleep in his own cabin. He's made few new friends due to his introversion, and has spent more of his stay being bitchy and keeping to the people he knows. Kishimoto, of course, causing his to "twitch" and further disconnecting him from his girlfriend back home, Katou who he's very comfortable with, and Nishi who makes him squirm for a plethora of reasons, (note that this does not keep him from talking with him). He has managed to make a few friends though, including Kudou Kazahaya who inexplicably trusts and sticks up for him, and a number of peripheral friends who he enjoys talking to. Problem with Kei, is he has to be talked to first, and will not likely EVER make the first move.
The newest changes to Kei are two fold, the first being that he realizes that he misses Gantz, which ties indirectly to the second which is the new element on Izumi Shion, who he knows from both his real world life, and his Gantz life. Kei is, to say the least, not fond of Izumi, and in addition to that, Izumi brings the realization of "back home" to him, and he's forced to consider where he stands with himself.
So there you go, kudos’ if you read all that, and feel free to talk to Kei :p He's hopelessly awkward, but not a bad guy :p
