It's that time again: the musical returns. I had originally written this scene to the tune of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" from Oklahoma! but about halfway through I realized there was another song that worked even better. Yes, that's right, I've finally done it...I've pillaged a song from Cats. Ha freaking ha.
teh_annah and
alouette_sparra get the requisite tip of the hat.
So yeah, the song for this number is "Bustopher Jones" from Cats. I know I chopped up Bustopher's solo a bit but I had to in order to keep the storyline chugging along. You got the song? Listen along. The laughter will be double-fold.
And now, on with the show!
Band of Brothers: The Musical!
Act One, Scene Twelve
Setting: Battalion HQ somewhere in Normandy
(song begins to the tune of “Bustopher Jones” from Cats)
(BLITHE wanders into the Battalion assembly area with SMOKEY and TALBERT)
(EASY COMPANY gathers around)
LUZ
Hey check it out, guys, look who came by.
How’re you doing there, Tab?
TALBERT
Been better, I guess, ‘cause it’s been a real mess
Finding where you boys were at.
(LIEBGOTT steps up with a captured Nazi flag)
LIEBGOTT
Hey Tab, take a look, how does that rate in your book?
LUZ
Wow, that’s pretty good swag.
TALBERT
Is that the real stuff or are you giving me guff?
LIEBGOTT
If it wasn’t then I wouldn’t brag.
(TALBERT pulls out a camouflage-patterned parachute)
TALBERT
Well, guys, gather ‘round and take a look what I found.
LUZ
Now Sarge, that’s some beautiful gear
It’s a hell of a poncho but there’s more out there you know.
EASY COMPANY
‘Cause we’re showing off souvenirs.
HOOBLER (spoken)
My Luger’s going to put you all to shame when I get it.
EASY COMPANY
We’ve survived D-Day and this is our way
Of keeping up morale and cheer
‘Cause after we kill a Kraut there can be no doubt
We’ll show off the souvenir.
(BLITHE makes his way over to PERCONTE and DUKEMAN)
DUKEMAN
Hello there, Blithe, I see that you’re still alive.
How did your jump go?
BLITHE
Well I missed the DZ and then I couldn’t find Easy
But other than that, I don’t know.
PERCONTE
So what do you say? Got anything to trade?
What war trophies have you got?
Hey, take a look and these beauties I took
These watches may tick but their owners do not.
(PERCONTE rolls his sleeve up to reveal several watches strapped to his wrist)
BLITHE (spoken)
I don’t have anything yet.
PERCONTE
About Lieutenant Meehan, would you say that you have seen him?
Did you come across him out there?
BLITHE
He hasn’t crossed my eye and might I ask why?
If Meehan isn’t here, then where?
DUKEMAN
You should probably know that Winters is CO
Since Meehan isn’t around.
PERCONTE
Company HQ is long overdue
They think that the plane went down.
BLITHE (spoken)
Oh.
EASY COMPANY
We’ve survived D-Day and this is our way
Of keeping up morale and cheer
‘Cause after we kill a Kraut there can be no doubt
That we’re showing off our swag
we’ll show it off and brag
We’re showing off souvenirs.
(WELSH enters)
WELSH
Everyone on your feet, no falling asleep
Get up ‘cause Easy’s moving out.
Let’s go, first platoon, sometime before noon
We’ve got ourselves a date with some Krauts.
Stand up, here we go.
EASY COMPANY
All right, we know!
WELSH
Boys, we’re taking Carentan.
PERCONTE
Gee, that sounds like fun, can’t wait to get it done.
BLITHE
I suppose it can’t be that bad.
WELSH
I want light and noise discipline, don’t make me say it again.
(music abruptly stops)
WELSH (spoken)
Oh, and Luz? No playing grab-fanny with the man in front of you.
(LUZ shrugs)
LUZ (spoken)
What?
(music resumes)
WELSH
Okay now, let’s get it in gear.
EASY COMPANY
Once we’re done with this bout, we’ll take some time out
‘Cause we’re showing off our swag
we’ll show it off and brag
We’re showing off souvenirs.
(EASY COMPANY moves out)
