The floorboards in his bedroom creaked. The sword by his bedside was still within reach, but he rolled to the other side of the bed closer to the dagger stored under the mattress; nearer to the direction of the sound and appearing to be still asleep all the while.
Perhaps he was toying with whomever or whatever it was. Not as if he was so important as to deserve the wrath or attentions of whoever was in his chambers unannounced in the middle of the night, he wasn't the King. Then again, as one of the knights, Elyan had seen enough to know anything was possible.
"Shhhh, You'll wake him up." His King said? Elyan had to have misheard that. Why would Arthur be in his room? And why would he want Elyan to remain asleep if he was?
"I'm not the one who thought this was a good idea. Sneaking up on men trained to kill at the least little thing has got to be the stupidest idea ever." Merlin too? Well that sort of went without saying didn't it? Merlin was the King's shadow.
"You are the idiot that came up with this idea of surprising them all with something nice."
"Yes. A banquet or more time off in rotation, but this is quite dumb." Merlin was hardlyly whispering.
"It'snotdumb!" Arthur angrily slurred his speech in his defence. "and will you be quiet before I put you in the stocks!" Arthur's shouted through clenched teeth. Even with Elyan's eyes closed, he could hear the lisp of every word and had to fight not to smile at them.
"You can't put your Court Sorcerer in the stocks." Merlin was most likely doing that disbelieving blustering tut-tut with his hands when he got excited around the King.
Elyan did his best not to laugh, he really did. In the end he had to roll back to the other side of the bed and bury his face against the old married couple, at least that's what they always reminded him of. Two of the most powerful men he had ever known reduced to tickle torture, slap fights and hair pulling. It was ridiculously amusing.
"I can do as I please!" The royal foot stomped on Elyan's floor. Only Merlin could turn their King back to a petulant child after aging him to grumpy old husband. "Cast the spell Merlin. We still have the rest to get through this evening."
"Fine. But you know he's awake now."
"So. He's at least a good respectful subject and being courteous to his sovereign."
Elyan could actually hear the eye roll from Merlin and gave a snort into his pillow.
