It was the third day since the capture of his would be magical assassin, and Arthur was no closer in coming up with a solution. Before he learned Merlin’s secret, Arthur would have put the witchy to death by sunrise. Now he felt that doing so, would continue the public fear of magic, his father installed. Which will be a step back in trying prove that magic can be use open, legally, and for the good of the kingdom.

Arthur noticed his musing lasted longer than he thought, when Merlin came in with his dinner tray. “I know that look,” Merlin said placing the tray on the table.

“Merlin, I do not have a look.”

“I case you forgot, I am Merlin, your manservant for the last five years. No one has spent as much time with you as I. You, Sire, have a look.” Merlin sat down across from Arthur, acting like it was the most normal thing for him to do. “You’re worried about something, what?”

“The witch in the dungeon, I don’t know how to go about punishing her and not have it counteract my push to have magic back in the kingdom.”

Merlin face relaxed at his predicament, “Arthur, your problem is you're still thinking with Uther’s reasoning. Your father saw a few people use magic for evil gains, and his reasoning was ban and destroy everything.”

“But it was for the safety of all of Camelot.”

“Arthur, if a family traveling the roads of Camelot, was attacked by bandits, and a few died, what will do when word came to you?”

“Merlin you know this. Send out a patrol and try to apprehend the highwaymen, before more citizens are robbed or killed.”

“So you don’t outlaw the weapons they used, like a sword?”

“Merlin, that has to be the dumbest-”

“Why because you use a sword?”

“Yes! No! I do use a sword Merlin, but I live by the knights code, and I am king, I don’t see how-”

“So, your reasoning is, anyone who has used a sword has done so for protection? All sword wielders are fair and just?”

“Of course not, it’s the person not the weapon.”
“So, how is that different than magic?”

“Because magic has the power to corrupt!” Arthur stood up from his chair, hands flat on the table, leaning over, towering over Merlin.

“And so does a sword wielding knight or a law passing king.” Merlin too stood out of his chair, ready to go toe to toe with Arthur. The king knew unlike any other argument they had, this one brought the powerful Merlin to the forefront. It made Arthur listen carefully what Merlin had to say next. “Your father had issues with magic, for some reasons you know and some you have yet to learn. But, instead of seeking help, knighting sorcerers, having magic users on his staff, he chose to eradicate the people that could wield the tool. He set war against people in his own kingdom. Mothers, fathers, children all who never raised a hand against the king, royal family or the court. He passed laws that gave just the ability to heal or tame a horse with magic, the reason to be your death. And his reasoning all was out of fear.”

Merlin sat back down, continuing a little more quieter, “Don’t let magic be the reason you have to put an assassin to death. Let her would be actions be the reason, they same you would state as if she came at you with a knife.”

Arthur sat still, thinking over Merlin’s rant, all of which were valid points. “Is it really that simple, my reasoning is wrong?”

“I don’t blame you Arthur, you’re people aren’t the only ones that learned to fear magic. Uther drilled that listen into his son and daughter.”

“Morgana, I never thought-”

“Arthur, that is a subject to be tackled in the morning. Now that your food is cold, I have to hope the cook will be kind when I have to request a heated replacement.” Merlin stood, reaching for the tray.

“No, it’s fine. Come sup with me, and lets talk about happier things.”

“Of course Arthur.” Merlin snagged Arthur’s loaf of bread tearing it in two, keeping the biggest half for himself, with a cheeky grin.
