It was an enjoyable Sunday morning, while Arthur was out on a small hunting excursion with his man servant, Merlin, when they were attacked.  With four, men closing in on them, from three sides, Merlin and Arthur positioned themselves so the attackers were visible on all sides.

Although Merlin was nowhere near knight status with a sword, Arthur had made sure Merlin knew which end to stick in his opponent, especially after Arthur became King.  Working in tandem, they quickly unarmed or drove away the would be bandits.

“This is getting out of hand, it’s been what, the third attack on a citizen of Camelot this week?”

“Fourth Sire, don't forget the two that thought they could take Percival on when he and I were out on an errand for Gaius.”  Merlin walked over to gather the horses, which had moved out of the way, as trained to do.

Sheathing his sword, Arthur, watched arms crossed and cocky grin, in true Arthur teasing manor, “That's right you weren't even around for that one.”

“It's not like I hid. Percival didn't know what to look … Arthur behind you!”

Turning quickly on his heal, Arthur pulled his sword, in time with the spin, so it was at the ready when he finish the half circle, prepared to face the new danger.  Only he was too late to stop the small hatchet that was rotating in a direct path toward his head.  And then it just stopped, and floated there about six inches away from his nose.
His attackers face paled and pointed behind Arthur, yelling “sorcerer.”

Fearing another attack, this one on Merlin, Arthur turned toward the direction the nameless attacked pointed out, ready to defend his friend.  Only there was no one but Merlin behind him.  Merlin who was looking at him with wide eyes.

“Merlin? Did you see-”

“It was him!”  Arthur turned back to the already forgotten man, the man that tried to kill him and now accused his loyal servant and friend of magic.

Merlin the only other person in the area.  Merlin who looked scared that he was caught.

Doing magic.

An act that, even though Arthur never pursued practitioners like his father, was still illegal within the boards of Camelot.

The sound of the hatchet dropping pulled Arthur out of his thoughts.  Looked back at where the hatchet had been frozen in air, only, Arthur saw the bandit still staring at Merlin.  The only other witness to Merlin's crime.  A crime that could be used against both of them if revealed to the wrong sources to soon.

Arthur's attach was swift.  Using his sword, he knocked the man out cold with a blow to the back of his head.
“Arthur you didn't -”

“I will not kill an unarmed man, but he will face punishment for attacking the king with intent to kill.”
Merlin walked the horses back to where Arthur stood over the man, sword already sheathed.  Slightly Merlin pulled out a length of rope, feeling the weight of Arthur's eyes on his back.

“Make sure to gag him too, Merlin.  I don't want him talking to anyone.”

Merlin turned around, confused look in his eye, before his face morphed into understanding.

“You saw.”

“Not now, we'll talk when we're safely in the walls of Camelot, but not out here where any of those bandits might be able to hear.”

Merlin nodded and got to working tying their prisoner up.

“Bet you can damned well be sure we will talk about it.”

Merlin nodded again, because there is no denying that Arthur now knew.  He'll just have to trust Arthur to be the just man he believes him to be.
