Leaving the Ball
The ball was magnificent and well attended. Uther had ensured many unmarried noble ladies were invited, and they arrived wearing beautiful gowns and glittering gems.
Merlin observed Arthur from the servant's perch behind the high table. Dancing with one pretty lady after the other, the prince conversed politely and smiled at them with tight lips as they crowded around him eagerly.
As the evening wore on, Arthur's look went from slightly uncomfortable to decidedly desperate. His brows showed a noticeable sheen of sweat.
Merlin finally decided to step in. Approaching Arthur, he bowed and said; "A courier has arrived with an urgent message for you, Sire."
"This late?"
"He requests to speak with you in private."
Arthur immediately made his excuses to his lady companion, and left the hall in a great hurry. "Merlin, keep up!"
As soon as they were safely on their own, Arthur reeled his manservant in, pushed him up against the wall, held him tight, and kissed him.
"You could have taken pity on me sooner," he grumbled.
"No fun in that," Merlin laughed. "Besides, your father would have noticed."
"True," Arthur acknowledged. "Now, let's go to my chambers to study that message in intimate detail."
