Merlin's heart is beating fast. His breathing is labored. His hands haven't left his ears yet.

He watches the flaming beast crouch to pounce.

On instinct, he flings his arms forward in a throwing motion. Through that motion, he rips up all the wood planks of the floor between himself and the beast and throws them in its face.

Many of them shatter on impact, but Merlin flings them at the beast again. The shards and splinters hit the beast in its eyes and ears, and, when it roars again, they lodge in the back of its throat.

The beast becomes distracted, and Merlin, with his long-past battle with Nimueh already in his thoughts, summons a bolt of lightning from the sky.

The lightning enters through the shattered window and lights up the beast. The sizzling sound increases until the smell of burnt flesh takes over.

The lightning bolt vanishes.

Merlin vomits into the area of torn-up flooring in front of him. Parts of the floor and wall nearby are still on fire where they aren't already charred black, and the smells are overwhelming.

The beast is dead. Its body lies in smoking, burst-apart pieces.

Merlin turns and runs from the room: out the door he came in, down the left-hand corridor, and past everything else to the inner-courtyard doors. The doors are barricaded with a heavy beam, but he needs air. He needs to find Arthur.

Merlin looks around him, sees no one, cracks the beam in half with his magic, and heaves one door open by hand. It's a space just wide enough for his thin frame to pass through, and he slips through it sideways.
