Back online at last

Apr 04, 2016 18:20

It's been a ridiculously long time until I have posted anything to my LJ - for one main reason, which is that for the last 4 months I have been living without a fandom computer. The rare things I've been able to post have been created in snatched moments on computers belonging to family members. But now I have finally wrestled with the quagmire ( Read more... )

I listened to that a while ago and enjoyed it hugely. So good to hear fandom being discussed without being mocked.

Congrats on being back online again!

Yes I agree - they did a good job of getting a panel of intelligent enthusiasts together. It is nice to see fandom being discussed in the mainstream without assuming that it's all 50 shades of grey!

I had no idea you were fighting for broadband access! Welcome back fandom warrior, stealing space on others' machines, perhaps swooping down in the pre coffee and adolescent free hours to write a few lines... Gives new perspective on that Room of One's Own thing-mentioned, I think, in that discussion group you shared about.

I enjoyed it, though I wish they had spent some more time on why women like M/M slash fiction. There was only one line about how sucky women's characters are and what a dearth there is and a lot more on the joys of yummy male flesh, which, yeah I'm not opposed, (see helpless reblogs of Damien Stills) but it doesn't explain why lesbians write m/m, which some do.

Good to see you, Cam! (Insert elaborate secret warrior society fist bump here.)

Thank you! *fist bumps back*

I agree I would be interested to hear more meta discussions, but this wasn't a bad start. I like the point they made that, on the whole, most men get what they want from the mainstream media and move on. It is interesting that such a huge proportion of fic writers and readers are women. I'm not generally fond of making gender based assumptions, but it is fair to say that cis straight men are largely absent from fandom. Their loss :)

They are glaringly absent, aren't they? It's like: if you build it, they won't come. It's shockingly concrete. I wonder if they're just not interested or if they are actively afraid.
