May 5th is not Mexican Independance DayruwheiMay 8 2010, 18:45:09 UTC
Just a polite little note, Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May) is not Mexican Independence day, but a holiday to celebrate Mexico's victory over French forces within Mexico in 1862. Mexico's independence day is September 16, and of course Mexico became independent from Spain (not France).
Mexicans think Americans celebrating May 5th is a little odd, since its not a big holiday in Mexico.
I think most of the British colonies gained independence more or less peacefully, and I'm sure a few African colonial territories did as well. "Peacefully" is always somewhat relative, there is always some Loyalist vs. Independist struggling that occurs.
Hope things are well up there in the frozen north!

Canada didn't get its own constitution until 1981 - we were never at war against the British. However, I do find monarchists a bit of a hoot.
Spring is slow to come here, but otherwise everything is good :-)
