Nick was half asleep, sprawled out over his bed. It was kind of nice, not having a roommate any more, though he had to admit that he found himself getting pretty lonely on the nights he didn't spend with Karen. Interesting, that.
A knock at the door dragged him back out of his half-sleep, though, and he sat up, groggily rubbing at his eyes. He really was hoping that it wasn't someone waking him up for yet another crime scene. Nick would be more than glad to not have to do his real job again any time soon.
Sleepily, he went to the door and pulled it open. And that definitely wasn't any of the CSI team. Instead it was Karen and a baby. "Hey," he said, looking at them in a bit of confusion. "Babysitting adventures take a little middle of the night side trip?"
"Sorry," Karen said, giving Nick an apologetic look before it dissolved into a wince when Sam really began crying. "Something like that, I'll explain. Can I put Sam in the other bed? She's just cranky and needs sleep."
"Go right ahead," Nick said, moving back into the room to clear some of his stuff off of the other bed. Since his roommate had stopped living there (disappeared? went somewhere else? who knows.), Nick had gotten pretty lazy about cleaning up after himself. He pushed some clothes and books onto the floor, nudging them under the bed with his foot. He was curious what prompted the surprise sleepover, but he knew Karen would tell him once she got the kid to stop freaking out like that.
Thankfully, Sam settled down quickly enough once she was in an actual bed, though Karen sat by her until she was fully asleep. The poor kid was going to have a long few days ahead of her, whether she understood what was going on or not.
"So," Karen began quietly as she stood up. "Pam's back. Jim was picking Sam up, and she showed up on the beach. She doesn't remember a single thing, and I took Sam so Jim could talk to her."
