The Frankeinstein Meme: Pilot Version

Feb 27, 2006 22:16

Definition: The Frankenstein concept was passed on to me from afterknowledge, who received it from wowbagger, who got it from...somewhere. Originally, a group of people signed up to participate. afterknowledge then provided a listing of 18-19 song requirements to be met.

For example, one requirement might be, "A song with a number in the title." To fulfill that requirement, one could use "4 & 20 Blues," "Walking 2 Hawaii," or "Sk8er Boi."

In the period of three or four weeks, the participants each created a mix CD according to the requirements. Once a participant had finished a mix, she/he then sent copies to all the other participants.

So what? A number of people have expressed interest in doing a Frankenstein project, so I've been trying to figure out the logistics. A locked community feels like it might be unwieldy, given time, but doing an actual CD exchange would be even more so.

Therefore, meme. Every few weeks or so (depending on how much interest this garners), I'll post a list of requirements for the mix. If you're interested in participating, make a post to your own LJ and then link to your post in the comments of this one. Like a ficathon masterlist, yeah?

All that's required is a tracklisting, and perhaps a brief explanations for the songs you chose. If you want to upload the songs, that would be awesome. If you're more comfortable locking your post, that's fine--just make a note so I can make note. If you want to do the whole shebang, pretty CD cover and all, yay! You are brilliant and we marvel at your creativity.

If you'd like to see a couple of examples, the Frankenstein mixes I've done so far are located here and here.

The Nitty-Gritty: If you're interested in participating, I've provided a list of requirements below. I'm not sure how many people might be interested, so I'm going to assign a tentative deadline of March 10. That's when I'll evaluate whether this is worth doing, based on how many people have participated (or at least expressed interest). So even if you don't get anything done for this particular challenge, I would like to hear if you'd be interested in future ones.

The Tracklist: As this is the first time, the list is going to be a little shorter than the average mix CD.
  1. A song that wakes you up in the morning.

  2. A song you loved in high school.

  3. A song that mentions a dead celebrity.

  4. A song you'd be embarrassed to listen to with your grandmother.

  5. A song that MTV will never play in a million, billion years.

  6. A song with a title that ends in y.

  7. A song that makes you crave something.

  8. A cover song that you think is better than the original.

  9. The original of #8.

  10. A song that reminds you of a fandom OTP.

  11. You have been caught mouthing the lyrics to this song.

  12. A song that will always make you think of a movie.

  13. A song that should totally have fic written about it.

  14. A song you wish they'd play in elevators.

  15. You'll stop listening to this song when they pry your MP3 player out of your cold, dead hands.
Once you've put together your mix, just link to your mix in the comments of this post or over at the masterlist.

If you've got any questions or suggestions, please fire away! I've never run anything quite like this before, so I'd love feedback on how to make it more fun or accessible. (And if I keep doing this, the posts will be much less wordy. Promise!)
