Last week was a weird one, reading-wise. I bring you a Star Wars/Mount TBR read that would've been a DNF if it hadn't been an SW book, as well as my reward for getting through it, Carrie Vaughn's latest Kitty novel!
More Rick is always good. More Kitty is even better. I didn't care too much for the trip to San Francisco, but I'm also looking forward to reading more of her books.
Honestly, the only reason I kept reading after Big Trouble was that Carrie is an acquaintance, and we have several very good mutual friends, and I'd been an outspoken fan of the series in the past and, haha, didn't want "yeah, so... it started to suck" to get back to her. I'm so glad the series found its feet again.
I was actually in Denver for the weekend when I read this one - that was fun.
Man, I'm so behind on the Kitty Norville series. The last one I read was Kitty Goes to War. I know I already own Kitty's Big Trouble, but it's lost somewhere inside my monstrous TBR pile! I really need to catch up one of these days...
This series benefited from being one of the early ones before the urban fantasy craze REALLY hit. I've noticed readers who try reading this series but already have a ton of UF under their belt don't get as much mileage out of this series... for me, I benefited by having it be the very first UF I ever read. :)
I'll be interested in your thoughts! I will say it's important to read the books in order, and the first four books have a fantastic arc, so complete that Vaughn could've conceivably stopped at book four and I would've been satisfied. :) Book five is the lowest point in the series, but it picks up from there (mostly). :)
I haven't read much as far as Star Wars is concerned--doesn't really interest me, to be honest, at least not at this time, which is a little odd, considering I've been a Star Wars fan since childhood.
I have recently started playing the Star Wars: The Old Republic mmo, but that's the only Star Wars game I've played. Interestingly, though, I've heard people on that game recommend the Bane trilogy to other players as a good read.
So, that kind of makes me wonder if these books do come off better if you're at least familiar with the storyline/events from the game(s).
And for the record, about ninety-nine percent of the Sith lore I know comes from playing The Old Republic--I don't know exactly how "canon" it is, but I've heard it's fairly reliable. The history, along with the importance of story, is one of the main things that draws me to the game.
Maybe having the game under your belt does lead to a more enjoyable experience with the trilogy... but I would say that if the SW books aren't really your thing, you probably shouldn't feel obligated to try them. Path of Destruction read like a whole lot of wish-fulfillment, a Marty Stu, more or less....
