Weekend Update: The Hugo Awards Need YOU!!!!

Jan 06, 2013 12:00

Those of you who follow this blog know that last year, I bought a supporting membership to the Hugos so that for the first time ever, I could vote on the nominees. It was, in short, quite the immersive experience. I wanted to read every nomination in the fiction categories, and that took a lot of time. I don't begrudge that time, however, because ( Read more... )

So, if I can't get a membership by January 31st, will I still be able to get one after and will I at least be able to vote on the nominees? When does voting usually take place?

YES. Last year, I think the last day to vote was either the end of July or sometime in August. Not sure which, but if you wanted to nominate for THIS year, the deadline to nominate is March, but you have to have a membership by the end of January to do so. If you get a membership anytime between now and the voting deadline, you get to vote this year and nominate next.

Yeah, I had no idea how quickly the award season started!

There's always the idea of getting a membership to vote on what's nominated, giving you a chance to read what others thing is the best of the best. :)

Wait until you see what gets nominated, and see if you think it'll be worth your while to vote! I hope you get to, whether or not you go to the con itself. :)

I already mentioned this, I think, but because of all your coverage, I ended up getting into this :) I already bought supporting for this one and the next. Now I need to start figuring out nominations! Yay.

I plan to nominate, but likely only in the best novel category. I need to do some more reading before I'm ready to nominate, I think. I do have a prediction for the best novel slate. Do you want to hear it now, or should I wait until your nominations post?

I plan to eventually get a supporting membership for 2013 so I can vote on the Hugos, but since I already have one for 2012, I won't need the 2013 one until later in the year.

I'd love to hear your prediction!

There's nothing wrong with nominating in only the categories you care about, even if it's just one. :)

I think the slate will be as follows:

Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, by Lois McMaster Bujold
Blackout, by Mira Grant
Railsea, by China Mieville
2312, by Kim Stanley Robinson
Redshirts, by John Scalzi.

I haven't read Railsea or 2312 yet, so this list is based at least in part on book reviews and authors' histories of getting nominated for the Hugos.

I can see that, though I think N.K. Jemisin's The Killing Moon has an excellent chance of making the ballot. And while I'm not sure this will happen, I'd like to see Elizabeth Bear's Range of Ghosts sneak in there too.

But if the ballot is as you predict, I'll have read 2 out of 3. I won't read the Bujold, because I'm BEHIND on that series, but I can probably deal with reading the other two.

Damn. I want to participate, but $50 is too much for me. Maybe next year will be the year. I'm thinking about trying to read all of the nominees this year at least!

That's too bad. You can still campaign though, tell people what you think deserves to be nominated! And reading along will be fun. :)
