The text below the <<<>>> is from a post I saw at the fabulous Ree Ree's blog (teamharkness ) which I've copied here. Warning, I'm going to get a bit ranty, personal, and preachy.
I've been afraid of the internet all week because every time that I log in, there's a new story. And I feel like there is nothing that I can really do. If I knew a gay teenager, I would make sure they knew they were loved. But I don't know any teenagers, and the community I live in already has people far more capable than me making sure high schoolers are educated

Hey thanks for posting this. I wonder if what made the difference for you is that you did have those friends, who sound like they are still around, even if the majority were horrid to you. I do also think there are cultural differences in the way young people react and behave.
I was really upset by the story of Tyler Clementi. I haven't read the other stories, I just can't understand what possesses people to be so vile.
Jeez, I missed this when you wrote this earlier this week due to sickliness.
Thank you for writing your experience. Despite my lack of enthusiasm towards the various projects aimed at people telling their stories and being inspirational, they are worthy projects and just reading your story in your space makes me feel a huge surge of solidarity with you (and general affection towards you).
Also, *scuffs toe* shucks (at your mention of me).
BUT WE LOVE YOU!madder_roseOctober 3 2010, 11:30:04 UTC
I'm glad you made it through, and that things are okay today (as okay as they ever are), and you and yours are happily together.
School is shit, basically but even worse for people who have something "obvious" the others can make use of and target. No one cares about kids it seems. No one cares about kids bulllying (abusing) other kids. Then there are the people who claim to be good and upstanding for ethics and morals who apparently have no problem trampling on others' rights or making them second class citizens.
It infuriates me. I think things like this "it gets better" is a great cause, but what would be even greater is if someone near the kids (no matter what their sexual orientation) tell them it's okay now, and that they have someone who is willing to listen to their problems.

I'd get preachy and no one wants that, so I'll just give you this:
