The first accident

The seconds after I realize I've lost control stretch long as decades. The edge of the road drops off sharply and there's something I'm supposed to do and then I put my foot on the brake and the car goes over the edge.

This is very well written. I've been in a several accidents and they were all terrifying. I couldn't imagine having to deal with icy conditions every year. Driving without that glitch is challenging enough.
