Inch by inch, row by row / Gonna make this garden grow...

Although Earth Day is tomorrow (and I’m one of the folks who remember the original one in 1970 [I even had the book]), I spent the day doing “earthy” stuff. Specifically: I worked in the yard. Yes, for the first time, a legitimate use for this userpic ( Read more... )

Perhaps at one time someone had a peanut garden?

That's all I can think of: He had peanut plants, and took them out at some point. However, I have no idea how well peanuts grow in the San Fernando Valley.

Squirrels are a possibility... there are a lot of them in the neighborhood. Sometimes they were a bit deep (8-10 inches). Do squirrels dig that deep?

Seven mint plants! Hope you like mint. :) Unless their bed is separated by something that goes pretty deeply into the soil, they'll spread beyond it pretty rapidly as well. Some of mine manage to creep out of the bottoms of their foot-deep pots.

That said, if you're ever looking for a mint, I collect any that I run across, so I have something like 12 or 15 varieties.

And your peanut mystery is already solved. I find a lot of walnuts and the occasional pecan in mine. I'm not sure who's feeding pecans to the squirrels-those are expensive!

We have a raised brick bed in our front entryway, so it won't get into the lower garden. There's a large dry area in front of the chimney it would have to cross to get into the rest of the upper bed, but what I'm planning to put there likely won't be bothered by the mint if it does spread.

We visited Pottsgrove Manor, a 200+ year old colonial manor that has been restored to it's revolutionary furnishings and decor. It was SO COOL! We had the guide all to ourselves for the 11:30 tour, and he and I got on like gangbusters. We bought a CD and anyone may buy me a gift cert to their museum shop for my birthday in July and it will be put to good use. They are having a big May Day celebration on the 5th, I can hardly wait ( ... )
