If you leave your passport, say, on a plane, do they automatically mail it back, or do you have to call them?

If the latter, what if it takes a week for you to notice? Are you screwed?

Travelling internationally? They'd catch it when you went through customs. Domestically? Call the airline.

Can you call the airline and ask? Isn't there something on the passport for where you mail lost passports? I don't think it gets mailed back to the actual person - I can't remember for sure but I know that when I had a military ID (treated the same as a passport overseas), there was a "return" address.

I really hope this never ever ever happens to me for real, because dude, the airline was no help, the lost and found was no help...I must never lose anything on a plane.

Most airlines have a lost and found. I would try calling them. If they haven't found it, you /can/ get replacement passports from the government, but I would start that process asap to be sure you have yours for travelling to OVFF. And there is a fee involved in getting the replacement.

I'd call the airline. Losing a passport is kind of a big deal, as they're sort of a potent bit of ID...and that's your only photo ID? No driver's license or state ID card or similar? I needed to present two photo IDs just to get my passport...

My state ID expired, and due to life being life, I've never managed to get a new one. I'm going to rectify that ASAP, promise.

Also: You need to let the passport people know immediately that your passport is no longer in your posession, just in case it falls into the wrong hands. They can alert airports, police, etc. that anyone using that passport for ID may not be who they claim to be.

Obviously, having done this, if the passport then shows up again, don't try to use it unless & until you've notified the passport people you found it! =:o?
