Ghosts of the open road.

Okay, so:

I am working on beating Sparrow Hill Road, aka, "The Further Adventures of Rose Marshall, Deeply Annoyed Hitchhiking Ghost," into book form. It's going pretty well, and I have a solid first draft, but it has been suggested (and not incorrectly) that I omit one of the existing stories. The Halloween one, to be specific, which is sort of ( Read more... )

Did Rose ever get out to Route 66 in southern California, where it goes through Baghdad? I've often imagined her doing something involving the Baghdad Cafe. There's imagery of her walking alongside the blacktop on a hot afternoon, with heat waves shimmering off the pavement and through her. Bluejeans. White crop top. Old olive drab military shirt she got from some Marine from 29 Palms...

If you were serious about Sparrow Hill Road being in the same universe and InCryptid, it might be nice to add a segment that makes it overt.

THIS. An encounter between Rose and a member of the Price family would be FANTASTIC.

In one of the stories (I forget the title, I don't have my printed out copy in front of me), Rose mentions that she saved money from babysitting the Price family, with the mice in the walls.

I would like to see her encounter a cryptid while babysitting the Healy kids in her pre-ghost life, but I'm pretty sure that's a silly piece that is not for this book, most of my unanswered Rose questions are of the what happens next?! variety. Maybe an encounter with one of the ghost species she rules out in the diner hold up story? Or a member of the Covenant? How do they feel about ghosts?

A scattered list:

  • There's a lot of other urban legends and stories of the open road. Does Rose know the truth of any of them?
  • Has anybody ever been deeply in denial when Rose came to be their guide? And what does that mean for her? (This thought inspired by The Cars song, "Drive.")
  • What exactly does an ambulomancer do, and how did Rose find out?
  • Has Rose ever met somebody twice - once hitching, and once heading into the twilight - and not necessarily in that order? And how does an eternal teenage ghost deal with somebody who remembers her, fondly or otherwise?
