I am always struck that Dickinson ordered that all of her writings be burned upon her death. Her sisters, reading through them, were horrified at the notion, and got them to editors who knew what they were worth, too.

I sometimes wonder whether she wouldn't have been so alone and shut-in had her poetry been published and recognized within her lifetime. She and Whitman made free verse popular, and acceptable to write.
