Five years ago today, my bluepoint Siamese, Leela, passed into the clearing at the end of the path. I still miss her deeply. Lilly is a sweet, loving, crazy, affectionate cat who displays all the best traits of her breed, and I adore her beyond words...but there are mornings where I wake up with a blue-faced girl purring on my chest and think 'ah ( Read more... )

I'm very sorry for your loss.

And yes, grief is... it can come upon you quite suddenly at times. Other times you know exactly why.

See what I did there with the writing in third person? Uh-huh.

I likened grief to the waves of the ocean lapping on a beach. We can't live underwater so the waves just lap and recede. They catch me by surprise even now..

Thank you. It has the virtue of truth. Grief catches me unawares frequently. It would be tidy if you could have a loss - take 10 minutes or hours from your life to deal with it and move on. Life is rarely tidy. There are days when I think the tidal wave of accumulated losses will crash over and consume me. Then the wave recedes...

I find it often more like a strong wind that blows so hard you can't think about anything but IT while it blows....

And then it's gone. Like it never was - until the breeze picks up again.

The never was part is the worst -
