This entry represents a bit of catch-up on my part; thanks to things getting hectic as all, well, heck, I've managed to let the last two recording dates pass without my usual efforts at faithful chronicling. I've always thought perhaps they are talking about eating a piece of cake. Which is, in most circumstances, pretty easy.

I looked around online, and like most idioms, it's hard to track the origins. The most likely seems to be that it originally referred to cakewalks: competitions where the couple who walked with the most style and grace won a cake. Compared to other kinds of competition, that's pretty easy.

"Piece of cake" might also have originally referred to something being sweet and good and luxurious -- "life is a piece of cake" -- and then mutated into meaning easy to do.
