Civility on public transit, or, keeping me from killing you.

With the rising price of gas forcing more and more people to seek alternative modes of transportation, it seems like record numbers of people are seeking alternative modes of transportation. Which means, in practical terms, that record numbers of people are abruptly shoving their way onto the buses and BART trains that have been my salvation for ( Read more... )

I used to keep one pocket of my awesome multi-pocket change purse exclusively for pre-counted bus fare, when I was riding the bus on a regular basis without a bus card. This made more happiness for everyone.

I want to print this and hand it out to every person I run across! LOL. I haven't ranted about this topic but you covered EVERYTHING in fine SWEET detail. I am saving this to memories. Srsly. :)

It was once explained that the definition of a Lady is "someone who thanks bus drivers". :)

In Chicago, it is also walk/run left and stand right. I'm still rehabbing a sprained ankle. I can mostly stand on the bus by now but stairs/escalators are tricky and sometimes I'm just not up to them. I'm on the right AND I'm standing sideways so as to make the most possible room for you. Just because I'm not carrying my cane today doesn't mean I don't kind of wish I had it - Mainly so that I could hit you with it when you shove.

Addendum: Let people get OFF the bus/train FIRST - it makes everybody's life easier. 1) They get to go where they're going a little faster, 2) the bus/train won't leave until they've gotten off anyway and 3) it makes more room for you to get ON into.
Really. It's just simple logic.

Oh, this one especially. In Seattle I can *always* tell the total rookies by their failure to check for people getting off before trying to get on. Folks, the bus has those neato clear things called "windows". You can look through them and see people walking toward the door.

Yup, and for the London tube ALWAYS assume there'll be people trying to get off at the door you want to use. Unless it's veryvery empty at some lateish or very early hour, in which case you'll have lost nothing, as the train will still stop, open it's doors and wait a moment before closing and leaving. And there won't be a seat shortage at that time, either...

Some places buses actually have two doors, you get on at the one at the front by the driver and off the one further back )and they are labelled). It's actually logical, which is probably why some people try to do it the other way round...
