Chained Sonnet Redouble: Devil's Trap (SPN, Seasons 1-2).

Dec 05, 2007 13:54

1. Lady of Fiddler's Green: Ellen.
So in the end, nobody gets to choose;
That's how it goes. There is no mercy here.
This bitter cup is one most would refuse,
But someone has to drink. That much is clear.
I lost a husband to this bitter war.
My daughter hears its siren song -- she'll go.
She'll never ask me what we're fighting for.
I guess she doesn't really want to know.
God damn you all. I didn't ask for this.
I kept my peace and tried to stand aside.
So mourn the light, and try not to dismiss
The blood we've shed...the tears we've never cried.

We've spent too many years upon this track.
What's done is done, and nothing takes it back.

2. The Devil: The Yellow-Eyed Demon.
What's done is done, and nothing takes it back:
Not all man's tears, nor all his pretty prayers.
Yet still they try, and still they seem to lack
This simple understanding: no one cares.
There's no salvation -- mercy is a lie.
There's only power, darkness, and the night.
They fight so hard, and yet, they always die,
And dying claim that they were in the right.
So let them stand. The end is pre-ordained.
There's nothing they can do to turn the tide.
They never learned: the Devil won't stay chained.
My hour can be delayed, but not denied.

The facts are far too simple to confuse:
If someone wins, somebody has to lose.

3. Deception's Daughter: Meg.
If someone wins, somebody has to lose:
A simple rule. Not hard to understand.
Not really structured for dissenting views.
To stay alive, just do as we demand.
You'll never be an equal, but who cares?
You humans like your pets -- you know the role.
Just give us full control of your affairs,
Your mind, your heart, your body and your soul,
And you can keep your petty lives...for now.
What's wrong with that? Our offer's plenty fair.
Refuse us and we'll take you anyhow.
Don't play on pity. Demons just don't care.

It's something more than mercy that we lack:
Somebody has to fall into the black.

4. Knight of Shadows: Gordon.
Somebody has to fall into the black;
Somebody has to take the harder road.
Is it my fault I never once looked back?
Somebody had to bear the greater load.
Is it my fault that they're too weak to see
What duty bids us do can't go undone?
That must be why the duty falls on me.
Some wars we can't afford to leave unwon.
So call me 'monster' if that makes you feel
A little less betrayed -- I'll understand.
Just give it time. I promise you, you'll heal.
I'll wash your brother's blood from off my hand.

I ask no blessing for the things I do:
Nobody said that fairy tales were true.

5. Page of Blades: Jo.
Nobody said that fairy tales were true;
Nobody had to tell me they were lies.
I put no faith in princes, or in you.
The wolves so rarely travel in disguise.
My mother tried to shield me from the dark;
My tower was made of light, and had no walls.
But she forgot that danger leaves its mark,
The sun goes down, and darkness always falls.
The knife was always easy by my side,
And what I know is there's so much to learn...
You told me that you'd call me, but you lied.
I guess sometimes the fairy tales return.

I guess I hoped I might be what you need.
No happy ending's ever guaranteed.

6. The Sacrificial Maiden: Jessica.
No happy ending's ever guaranteed.
That's life. That's something everybody knows.
We work and pray we'll get the things we need,
And close the shutters when the night wind blows.
He knew me, all my secrets, all my sins,
The things I'd never told a man before...
So where was he the night the dark came in,
The night that death came banging at my door?
I loved him, but I never will forgive
The secrets that he kept, the lies he told.
He stole away the life I'll never live.
I never was a bride. I won't grow old.

Was anything he told me really true?
The night descends. How can they make it through?

7. Lady of the Flames: Mary Winchester.
The night descends. How can they make it through?
My darling boys, so small and so alone.
May God forgive the things they have to do.
May time bring better days than what they've known.
I would have stayed. The choice was never mine.
I would have loved you long and loved you well...
But cold regret serves only bitter wine,
And what's ahead was never mine to tell.
My boys, be strong, and hold each other tight.
You're all you have, and all that you can save.
Release your dead, and bid us all good-night...
The mercy you may find's not in the grave.

There is no knowing where their road may lead.
The only certain truth is that they'll bleed.

8. Lady of Situations: Missouri.
The only certain truth is that we'll bleed:
I told John that a long damn time ago.
There's muddy waters when the floods recede,
And sometimes, well, those waters roll back slow.
I told him what would come, what it would cost,
What he would pay to set out on that road...
And damn that man, he was already lost,
And now those boys will pay the debts he owed.
It isn't fair. That doesn't change a thing.
Those boys will never know just what he's done --
And in the end, ain't that the final sting?
They're always gonna be their daddy's sons.

The road to hell is such a slippery slope...
So cling to light, to family and hope.

9. Father of Dilemmas: John Winchester.
'So cling to light, to family and hope' --
She told me what to do. I didn't hear.
A man can hang himself on duty's rope
If he gets blinded by his rage and fear.
Can she forgive me for the price I paid,
The things I did with love to justify
The pleas I left unanswered and betrayed?
Is there a place for fathers such as I?
I did my best. It never was enough.
I let them down before this quest began.
I pray my sons are made of sterner stuff.
Lord, show a little mercy, if you can.

There's two things can remain, when hope is gone:
Believe in silver bullets and the dawn.

10. The Alchemist: Bobby.
Believe in silver bullets and the dawn:
Believe in holy water and the cross.
Believe in all the symbols that you've drawn.
Don't ever think of doubt, or pain, or loss.
A man can lose his faith, he fights too long;
A man can start to think that he's alone.
That good has never really been that strong;
That maybe he was praying to the stone.
A man has got to stand by what he knows,
To hold the light and try to hold the line,
And even though the darkness always grows,
Still he can say 'I stood by what was mine'.

And that's the moment we see evil's scope...
When darkness falls until what's good can't cope,

11. Temptation/Death: Tessa.
When darkness falls until what's good can't cope,
That's when you know the final hour is near.
No needs for blades, for poison or the rope.
No need for weeping now, no need for fear.
Just let it go, and let the silence in.
This isn't darkness, darling; this is peace.
The chance to sleep, the freedom from your sin.
Let go of anger, take your sweet release,
And let your sorrows fade into the past.
This is the only chance that you may get.
Believe me when I tell you it can't last.
Let go -- give in -- or live with your regret.

Don't be afraid they'll miss you when you're gone.
Believe that something true can still hold on.

12. The Chariot: The Impala.
Believe that something true can still hold on;
Believe in open roads, believe in speed.
Believe in driving straight into the dawn.
Believe in me. I'm everything you need.
In chrome and glass and horses made of steel,
Whatever strength I have is yours to take;
Just slide yourself inside and take the wheel.
I'm stronger than you think, and I won't break.
A knight should have a steed; let me be yours.
I'll be the one to bear you to the field.
And when we've fought and won a thousand wars,
Remember that I never chose to yield.

So do your worst -- I die at your command.
To do what's right, we have to turn and stand.

13: The Chosen One: Sam Winchester.
To do what's right, we have to turn and stand;
And tell me, what's the value of a man?
This isn't quite the future I had planned,
Now I have to endure it, if I can.
This isn't right, and this was never fair:
I should have had a chance to pick my path.
I guess that God just doesn't want to care.
He's left us open to the Devil's wrath.
So how much should I pay to stay alive?
How many good intentions does it need?
How many ways can this damn war contrive
To break my heart, to force a stone to bleed?

The days slide by like empty, shifting sands.
We cannot change the prices fate demands.

14. Soldier of Fortune: Dean Winchester.
We cannot change the prices fate demands.
We shouldn't try. It isn't worth the cost.
We place our bids and take the dealer's hands,
And pray that just this once, the house has lost.
It isn't hard to bid your hopes farewell;
Give up, give in, and let this be your all.
We'll be the sort of story children tell,
And all we have to do is fight, and fall.
You know I'll save you, Sammy, if I can;
You're all I've ever really had that's good.
If just one walks away, well, here's the plan:
I'll save you, just the way a brother should.

We never had the option to refuse...
So in the end, nobody gets to choose.

15. Destiny: Unthwarted, Unforgiving.
So in the end, nobody gets to choose;
What's done is done, and nothing takes it back.
If someone wins, somebody has to lose,
Somebody has to fall into the black.
Nobody said that fairy tales were true --
No happy ending's ever guaranteed --
The night descends. How can we make it through?
The only certain truth is that we'll bleed.
So cling to light, to family and hope,
Believe in silver bullets and the dawn.
When darkness falls until what's good can't cope,
Believe that something true can still hold on.

To do what's right, we have to turn and stand.
We cannot change the prices fate demands.

(*I am a bad, bad structured poet, and cheated form for the sake of narrative clarity: in lines which feature a pronoun, that pronoun has been changed to fit the speaker, even if it was located in one of the terminal lines. So 'she, her' may become 'I, me', if the situation demanded it. Mea culpa.)
