A memo to people who seem to want me to hit them:

May 26, 2006 11:37

Hi.

I am not a professional musician, and I have a day job; this is true. However, spontaniously walking up to me at work and saying you love my CD, but don't need to buy a copy because you ripped it off of someone else's iPod? Does not actually endear you to me. In fact, it does quite the opposite. I don't need anyone to buy this CD -- we did ( Read more... )

Have to agree.

Speaking of which, since I missed the preorder, where CAN I order a copy?

(No, I haven't heard it yet, and don't have an illegal copy. But I am interested in your music and how it's changed in the last decade)

I don't care if people have illegal copies, hon; I know that most of them will 'upgrade' to a legal one when they can, and I've had illegal copies of lots of things, when I was way broke. It's the ones who seem to think this is something to brag about, y'know?

Right now, there are no online ordering locations. I'll have copies for direct sale at BayCon, however...

Oh bother. I hadn't known if I wanted it - figuring I don't know about most of the fandoms, so I might not understand it - but then autographedcat raved about it and assured me I would. So I wanted to order one. Let us know if there's any other way? I'm in Texas and definitely not making it to BayCon.

We're looking at a way to do online orders -- the main issue is the time it takes to ship, but aiglet is willing to help, so hopefully, we'll be able to work something out, and I'll make sure to post if and when we do!

And yay!

Makes sense to me. I tend to do trial runs a lot -- burning CDs in order to figure out whether I want them or not. But the only ones that I burn and keep are either mixes of mostly things I own, stuff that I already bought once but the physical CD broke, or else stuff that's out of print and not available used on the market, and those I do on the understanding that I'm honor-bound to buy one if it ever gets re-released someday.

Need to order one of your CDs but can't afford it right now. Do I have to worry about them running out and not being reissued?

Exactly. I mean, if you get a burned copy 'cause you can't afford one right now, that's one thing. Ditto having tracks on a mix tape -- mix tapes rule. But the whole thing? With intent to keep forever? That just sucks.

I'll be getting CDs to filk dealers as of Concertino, and looking at setting up online sales sometime after that.

*does the dance of glee*

I was broke during the pre-order thing (damn house sucked me dry *G*). Hearing that there shall be online ordering so that when my contracts come all in, I can get one is great to hear. I shall wait patiently (until the contracts are in that is. then only semi-patiently).

As for anyone who would do that? Total lack of class. I would send the puppy on my lap to bite them if not for ... well, the whole 'being asleep and currently forcing me to sit' thing. (and potential contanimates, because anyone with that little class is bound to have cooties or something)

You should have smiled nicely and asked their name, and the name of who they got it off.... acting like a happy musician fawning over fans.

And then slap them with DMCA notices.

I have to work with these people, unfortunately.

I just glared.

Report them to HR for theft, get them fired.

Or call on one of your muscular friends to "persuade" them?

Do some people just not think? Is that what it is?

I don't know. I mean, I have bootlegs of things that aren't available anymore? That aren't for sale? And I still wouldn't walk up to the artists and go 'ha ha guess what I have'.

I wouldn't walk up to the artists and brag about it, I would however in many cases like to say "I owe you some royalties" when the material has been OOP and is not likely to be rereleased. But with a newly released CD? They are just asking for a lawsuit...

I once offered money to a musician for exactly that reason. I coulnd't buy it but I wanted to show appreciation that she had made the album...I felt guilty 'stealing' from a small artist that I wanted to support.

I think you handled the situation far more gracefully than I would have.
