What I generally do is make 2 lists:

Must have items
Want to have items

Then I take my travel bag, and fill it with the must have items first. Then proceed to fill it up with the want to have items.

Must haves:
a change of socks an underware for each day + 1 extra
a belt to match shoes
appropriate footware x2 (one of these you should be wearing)
a change of pants for each day /2 (on vacation I generally wear the same pants twice to cut down on space)
a shirt for each day
toiletry kit (teeth, hair, smell, body hair)
weather appropriate outer ware

Want to haves:
"specialty" clothing (swim trunks, a nice outfit, costuming)
extra clothing/shirts

Things I pack that other people think is strange:
2 trash bags and 3 large empty ziplock bags
a sewing kit
an eyeglass repair kit
simple first aide supplies (alcohol swabs and bandages)
charger for cell phone

If any of those items don't make immediate sense, just ask :)

I only have one question. Why pack a toiletry bag when most hotels already have a toilet?
