So I'm writing my syllabus for "How Race & Ethnicity Shape American Social Life," and I'm doing a day on the internet. I have plenty of stuff to SAY about race in MMO(RPG)s, but no articles. Can anyone refer me to anything, scholarly or otherwise?

It's odd that UW seems not to employ librarians. A librarian could really help you out. Pity there are none. Shame, really. Sad. Sad.

Wha!? No librarians! At UT there was a whole fleet of them, one for each subject area. I didn't use them very often but the sociology and gender librarians were very helpful in ordering books if I wanted them and the library didn't have them yet. It was great!

I'm upset I'm moving into a librarian-less zone.

I now realize that quite possibly I'm missing the sarcasm in the above...

Yeah, I was being sarcastic. :-)

University libraries are pretty safe yet but a lot of schools are losing their librarians due to budget shortages.

Ha ha! I yell at Cabell all the time for not utilizing her university library to its full extent. :-)

Dude, on the occasions when I have tried to use our librarians, they have never failed to disappoint.

I'm actually giving them Nakamura's early article on identity tourism but wanted something more current--I found another book she helped edit but it was WAY too dense for most undergrads, I thought. I'll check that one out. Thanks!

Kingdom's really gone to hell since they started letting those green-skins live here, running around with their loincloths half-covering their asses and playing their drum music all night long.

Sorry, got nothin'...

Well, I don't know if there's any helpful material there for this subject, but if you haven't looked at the Daedalus Project, it might be interesting at least.

CMS.600 has these readings on race:
Always_Black. "Bow, Nigger." In Salen & Zimmerman. 2004.

Gee, Jim. "Cultural Models: Do You Want to be the Blue Sonic or the Dark Sonic?" In Salen & Zimmerman. 2003.

Adams, Ernest. "Not Just Rappers and Athletes."

Leonard, D. J. "Not a Hater, Just Keepin' It Real: The Importance of Race- and Gender-Based Game Studies." Games and Culture 1, no. 1 (January 2006): 83-88.

Au, Wagner James. "The Freeform Identity Bebop of Eboni Khan." (Wagner James Au's discussion of blackness in Second Life.)

Everett, and Watkins. "Now Representing: Games and the Learning Space of Race."

DeVane, B., and K. D. Squire. "The Meanings of Race and Violence in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas." Games and Culture. (Forthcoming)

Salen & Zimmerman = The Game Design Reader. I haven't read these to know if any specifically tackle MMOs (SL?), but maybe they have useful references? Hope this helps.
