Well, I just wasted an absolutely gorgeous afternoon wrestling with the scanner in The Loft, which seemed hell-bent on reducing me to a snivelling wreck. I was trying to scan a whole heap of photos of me as a young munchkin (with a superb early '90s fringe!) to put on my 21st invites, and the stupid computer kept telling me that I had no space on ( Read more... )

What kind of job were you thinking of getting when you graduate? I'm not sure what a fine arts degree entails, but it sounds like you could definitely teach, if you wanted to.

My degree is a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in English literature, whereas Fine Arts, what my friend did, specialises in the visual arts. As for a career, it's always been a dream to make it as a writer, as I said in my post, my it's kinda ridiculous to expect to make a living out of writing to start off with, especially in New Zealand. So, the plan is try for a career in publishing, print journalism, or radio announcing...and if all else fails, there's always the public service! :P

As for teaching...heeeellll no. Teaching, for me, is pretty much a last resort. I hated school, and the thought of ended up back at school all over again is the stuff nightmares are made of. Yes, I am a snob.

Darling, I am being paid simply obscene amounts of money for very little work.

The degree you have has almost nothing to do with your career - it depends a lot more on what kind of person you are.

Well, I want to be an actor. Not exactly the most stable job or the wisest choice if I choose to stay in NZ (which I probably won't). Plenty of people have just said "Oh that's nice.. so you'll be a drama teacher?" after I tell them I'm going to drama school. Personally, I can't think of anything worse than teaching little brats. My Mother has always said that I could be a teacher if acting didn't work out but they don't understand that it *will* work out because I have the ambition, passion and motivation to make it work.

Sorry, this topic usually gets me worked up. I'll stop rambling now :P

All I can say here (and I DO NOT mean this in a condescending way) is kudos to you for having a vision, and for having clear direction of where you want to go in life. I used to have a very clear path mentally carved out ahead of me, but I've been rather fuzzy since finishing at Uni, which kinda sucks.

What kind of acting are you planning on doing? I've heard from various actors that making a decent living out of acting in New Zealand is like herding cats, to be quite honest. It wouldn't be such a bad idea to head overseas...unless you want to get stuck on Shortland Street. *shudder*

I will admit I myself have flirted with the idea of being an actor, preferably in theatre. I've always had a massive passion for performing arts, but there's no way I'd be good enough to even make it into drama school.

Don't worry, I'm planning on doing further study. I'll be doing Honours in English next year, and then I'll choose between doing a diploma in journalism or doing a Polytech course in publishing and editing. I've heard, however, that publishing is an absolute bi-atch to get a job in, so I might well revert to my original plan of going to journalism school. I

Either way, I'll probably end up joining the brain-drain. :P

I do have a dream of working in campus ministry, but I'm a little iffy about that, for various reasons.

So yeah, I'll need to be further qualified to do what I want...it's just been hard at the moment trying to get a job with only my Bachelors degree.

Thanks for the prayers...gotta keep remembering Jeremiah 29:11, eh?

Do like the Mims, and plan to be a student living off postgrad scholarships for the rest of your life ;) Actually I'm kidding about that one. Linguistics research or Psych research for me. :P

Yeah, and the sad thing is is that that's looking pretty likely...
