Nice Dan POV. I like the acknowledgment that "happily ever after" will require some mental transitioning on Dan's part. I also enjoyed seeing Duck through Dan's eyes and the depiction of Dan and Duck's initial interactions at the Watch-Duck as the quiet, low-key rebel and Dan's initial nervousness about correctly interpreting the rules (your depiction of Dan reminds me a bit of myself, actually).

This made me laugh and awww at the same time:

Duck lies there panting for a few moments after, and then, eyes still closed, smiles and says, "Okay, house tour. This is the bedroom," and Dan laughs for a long time.

Lastly,a big Yay! for including a pair of the film's bit players-the goggle-eyed hospital aide and Stuart (is this Stuart's first ever appearance in Wilby fic?). Dan's messing with the aide is priceless, and I especially love how Duck's handling of Stuart is reminiscent of the way he interacts with Carol in the movie-seeing the person underneath the hostility.

Lovely work!

Aw thank you! I hadn't thought about the Stuart scene having echoes of Carol, but it really does, doesn't it? Most people would have had something else entirely to say to both Carol and Stuart...

Glad you liked!

This was lovely.

I really like Dan's voice here, as he's trying to figure out what to do about the store and staying on the island--trying to justify to himself that the "small steps" would be be the best option and then changing his mind at the end.

But after a few days of no one seeing him but Duck, of the only looks directed at him being looks of approval and amusement and lust, the idea of walking the streets of Wilby sounds...so visible, so vulnerable.

Aww. I am really happy that Dan's staying in Wilby.

And they are helping Stuart so he'll have it easier than them. That is nice, too.

Everyone needs a Duck MacDonald in their lives.

Bravo to the realistic (and romantic) handling of Dan stepping back into his life in Wilby and with Duck. I love the "ah, fuck it" in the hospital, and yay for Stuart cameo!

When I rewatched Stuart kind of stepped up to the plate and gave me somewhere to GO with the story, so I am grateful to him!

Thank you!
