So much for posting even once a month... And now I'm mostly posting because I've got a question, to be honest. But let's start with that and then see where we go
( Read more... )
I'm really really hoping it was just a glitch email, because if they did suspend my lj all the comms I run and/or post to would lose so much content that I've stored in my lj photo album...
Pros fractured years ago, when a gang came in and decided to split everyone up so that they could run their own comm, and then in the various lj-faffs when people ran off to other forums like InsaneJournal and Dreamwidth, and then as people trickled away just naturally to other fandoms, but also because there was less to read... all one big spiral down, no matter how hard we tried to keep our little world going. I mean, we're still here - but barely... and I'm definitely feeling but-if-no-one-speaks-what's-the-point-of-talking-to-start-with...
I haven't had one of those emails from LJ but I'm always in trouble on FB for seemingly innocent posts. I hate FB.
I made the mistake once of saying the kudo thing on AO3 should be removed since kudos (and likes) mean nothing in particular. I know many people who hit kudo for every single story posted in their fandom as a "thank you". Nothing to do with actually reading any story. I know, I'm a troublemaker.
I don't like Fb, and I won't do Pros fandom on it - so that was a bit of a sad thing for me when everyone ran over there to play instead... I hope there are slash-friendly groups there now, but I know back-when it was very anti-slash and even male-dominated, which was absolutely not what I want in fandom, even if I did want to mix personal and fandom on Fb...
I don't have a problem with kudos and like buttons in general - sometimes your brain is just couscous and the best you can do to show that you heard someone and appreciate them is hit a "like" button of some kind. Way back when alot of people would just use the words "thank you" in reply to a fic that had been posted, or similar, and that's really the same thing. But I miss more extended engagement on top of the ability to like and send kudos. There just doesn't seem to be room in the world here for both - and if no one's going to talk back to me when I talk, then I question the point of posting in the first place... and I'm not un-guilty of it myself; people have posted

The Pros FB group Bistocon is very much slash friendly, and getting more active lately. Yes, LJ was very much more chatty friendly, but...it's like the nearest mall to my city, nearly deserted.
We have been discussing where Cowley might live on Bistocon FB, and what fans love about Doyle and Bodie.
A year or so ago I had the same mail from LJ and when I checked it was only a comment from a spammer that they deleted. It seems that, if someone reports a spammer to LJ they delete all of the comments the spammer wrote. It was a comment to one of my earliest entries and it was really weird. My post was in German and the comment was in some Cyrillic writing. So maybe that's what's happened here.
As for the like button, I don't like it. I must admit that I used it sporadically after I had written a comment, but I don't like it. It reminds me of FB which I didn't like a lot either. There is no possibility of having any conversation over a longer period on FB. And I don't like to post any images or anything else there.
And I don't post on DW. DW is only the backup for my LJ and if my LJ ever vanishes all my pictures and everything will be gone.
Deleting postings from an old community, so that it looks like the community is a new one you created, is very nasty. If Fiorenza liked the old com and wanted to start a new one she should have

A year or so ago I had the same mail from LJ... Oh you did?! That's kind of a relief, because you're still here... *g* I did wonder if it might be comment spam, but I usually catch them via notifications and delete them myself. I've had them in Cyrillic and also English over the last few years, and to the comms as well. Bit harsh for lj to threaten to suspend us because someone else added comment spam, though...! Hmmn!
As for the like button, I don't like it. I must admit... I'd probably use it myself if I had access to it, but it doesn't show up on my old-style lj. I don't mind it being used as such, because you don't always have something specific to say, and when my brain feels like mush it would be a good way to say "I read you! I saw you!" it's just that's almost all that people do now, even on lj...
And I don't post on DW. DW is only the backup for my LJ and if my LJ ever vanishes all my pictures and everything will be gone.Snap! *g* That's why I have one too. Every now and then I re-import my lj there, as back-up

I sometimes feel discouraged by the lack comments on my bingo posts. I know that a lot of the time my write-ups are pretty general and perhaps not suited to sparking discussion. Sometimes I feel like I've written something worth engaging with, though, and nothing comes of it.
Nevertheless, I like the heart button. In my bingo posts, I encourage people to use it. It helps me to know that someone is reading my posts, and a lot of the time I wouldn't have any evidence of that without hearts.
I'm not keen on the idea of "resurrecting" a comm, only to delete all the old posts Are you sure that's what happened? Because that would indeed be bad, but it seems uncharacteristic to me.
and then criticise slash on there, when it was perfectly slash-friendly to start with the conversation...felt rather homophobic to meShe does both read and write slash, but also has an interest in gen friendship fics and wishes they were more popular. I don't think she intended to attack slash, much less for homophobic reasons

Yes, I agree about the heart button - it can be a nice shortcut to showing that you've read something and appreciate it being there when your brain is maybe couscous and you don't have the energy to think about something in any depth. I can't access it on my own lj, and I've wished that I could. But I also wish there was more conversation and discussion and general chat, because that was always what inspired me to write the next post/fic/etc. So that's one of the main reasons I find I'm posting less, I think.
I'm not keen on the idea of "resurrecting" a comm, only to delete all the old posts Are you sure that's what happened? Because that would indeed be bad, but it seems uncharacteristic to me. She said she was resurrecting an old comm, and it is indeed one that I and various other people had joined a long time ago, but the only posts now in that comm are the ones she's written herself this year. Maddalia, who created the comm, deleted her lj and that often means that posts and comments elsewhere vanish as well - but did no one

Hm. Well, you do have a much longer experience of her than I do. And context is important.
As I said above, I like gen. Being a non-gen person, though, I never feel entirely comfortable in gen-only spaces. There's always the question in my mind of why the people there need a gen-only space.
OFMD sounds interesting. Maybe I will bestir myself to check it out one of these days.
I didn't even know there was a like button! You might be like me - I can't see the like button on my lj, because I've stubbornly hung on to my old lj style, and so I've missed out on a few of the newest things lj has added. I eventually cottoned on when I saw other people using it - and I do get notifications now to say someone has liked my post, and I can unscreen the comment to show that...
Sorry about the spammy thing, I haven't seen anything like that. I'm hopeful after someone else said they'd had an email above, that it was connected with a spam comment that someone made, and not with my post at all. I usually catch and report spam comments, but maybe I missed this one, or didn't get the notification... Crossing fingers, anyway!

That's the first I've heard of that.
I don't know where we go to talk easily. . . .most all seemed fractured in the multiple platforms, but none are easy to navigate.
Don't disappear!!
