Ever since Charlie had moved back to the Burrow, the kitchen had been his refuge whenever he couldn't sleep -which, these days, was a rather frequent occurrence. However carefree and good-natured he may be, he was having as hard a time as the rest of the family trying to recover from the past months. While he still hadn't let anyone (except Bill and Percy) know of his decision not to go back to Romania, the process was engaged now, the application for the Ministry job was sent, and he needed time to figure out how to adjust to this new life. That was a significant part of his life - seven years - that he was letting go of here; and, although after all that had happened in the family, he felt that he was ready to turn this page, it did not mean that it would not take him some time to adapt.
Midnight found him sitting at the kitchen table, absently sipping at a glass of water while these thoughts were running through his mind. After a while, he closed his eyes, leant back his head, and heaved a deep sigh. Somehow, the kitchen had always had a strange kind of soothing power on him. Perhaps it was because it carried, in his mind, the image of his mother's reassuring presence, but as a child, this was the place where he would end up in whenever he had a nightmare. His parents had found him on more than one morning, curled up on a chair and sleeping soundly.
This, of course, had not happened for years; yet, the house was so quiet (or, rather, as quiet as the Burrow can be) and the moonlit kitchen had such a peaceful atmosphere that he suddenly felt himself drift off to sleep.
