Molly had spent the better part of two or three hours simply staring at the ceiling and wishing she could sleep. There were nights, since the Battle of Hogwarts, that she was lucky to get a couple of hours sleep. Images played over and over in her head, leaning her head on Fred's chest willing him to breathe, Arthur tugging her away from Fred, Bellatrix Lestrange dying at her hand, and the image of Harry being craddled by Hagrid ( ... )

"Careful, its fangs are venomous," muttered Charlie in his sleep. "Venomous, I sa--ah!" he startled slightly when something touched him on the shoulder. His eyes snapped open, and he saw his mother.

"M-mum?" he yawned, remembering at the last second to put his hand before his mouth when he did so. "Did I wake you up? I'm sorry... I was just having a glass of water and... well - I guess I fell asleep."

He quickly passed a hand through his tousled hair. When he looked up, he could not help noticing how tired his mother looked. "Hey," he said with a soft smile, "why don't you sit here and I prepare you a glass of warm milk? Or, better, I'll prepare some of that secret drink they drink in Romania..."

"That would be wonderful Charlie," Molly sighed and sat down in the chair. "Trouble sleeping dear?"

Charlie shrugged and Molly pulled her chair up to the table to watch him work. He was hiding most of the ingredients he was pulling out of the cupboard but she thought she saw a bottle of vanilla join the others on the counter.

"It's been wonderful having you home," Molly ran her hand over her face and smiled when Charlie turned around. "I see you've learned your way about the kitchen."

Molly hid a yawn behind her hand as Charlie turned on the stove and began mixing ingredients.

"How much longer will you be staying?"

Molly hoped Charlie would stay a bit longer. She missed him when he was so far away. Her mind drifted back to when Charlie was first learning to walk and she smiled when she remember what finally got him up and moving--Errol.

"Here," Charlie said as he handed her a mug. The drink was warm and its smell was somewhere between chocolate and cinnamon syrup. Charlie smiled when his mother commented about his new habits. "Well, mum, does this mean that you'll let me cook dinner some day, then? I haven't actually blown up a kitchen in a few months, you know!"

He grinned, warming his hands around his own cup. "As for how long I'll be staying, well..." He hesitated for a while before continuing. Was this the right time to let her know about his recent projects? He had planned on making a big announcement about it to everyone later on, but somehow it felt right to talk about it now, here, only to her.

"I... well, you know I talked to dad the other day about going back to Romania in a couple of weeks. But... I have... I mean, things have happened and... well, how can I put it... Hmm..."

It was official: he had absolutely no skills for that kind of announcements.

"Charlie?" Molly felt the panic well up inside her and her heart raced. "You love Dragons--I can't imagine..." Molly's voice trailed off and she gasped. "You're not sick are you?"

Molly couldn't imagine what Charlie was trying to tell her and she tapped her fingers on the table to keep from ringing them.

"I know you were going to see a Healer before you went back," Molly's hand flew to her mouth. "You haven't been let go have you? Or gotten a young woman in trouble...That can't be it...I raised you better than that. You're sick aren't you! Tell me, Charlie!"

Molly glanced at her clock, sitting about the stove, and she squinted trying to see Charlie's hand. She didn't know what to say or do but the thought of losing another son sent chills down her spine.

Charlie observed with a certain amount of puzzlement his mother's panicked expression . "I'm... what?" His eyes suddenly widened as realization finally dawned on him that he had been less than explicit in his announcement. "Oh no-no, no, I'm not sick at all, Mum!" he assured her, waving his arms in nervous, indefinite gestures. "I didn't mean to say that at all! What I meant to say was, I'm... I'm not returning to Romania. I want to stay here in England with you, with... everybody ( ... )

"You," Molly said weakly and grabbed the dish towel from the table and swatted Charlie's arm. "Scared the life out of me."

Molly took several deep breaths and tried to stop her racing heart. She could deny she was pleased that Charlie had decided to stay in London. A bit of her went with him everytime he left and she had to confess he'd become a man away from home. He'd left directly after Hogwarts and it was as if he grew up without her getting a chance to really get to know who he was now.

"I'm glad you're staying, Charlie," She smiled and reached out to pat his hand. "Are you sure this is what you want? You seemed to love your time in Romania."

Molly searched Charlie's face for signs of regret and found none.

"Charlie," Molly said softly. "Have you decided what you're going to do?"

Charlie couldn't say that it had been an easy decision to make. He had loved his job in Romania, and he had loved his life there. Not coming back to Romania meant leaving some very close friends behind, and an entire part of his life... but as he saw his mother's smile, Charlie knew that it was the right thing to do ( ... )

Charlie couldn't help noticing the sadness in his mum's eyes, even as she smiled at him. It was hard for him to deal with everything that had happened, but he could only imagine how it had felt like for her, a mother, to worry constantly about her children and her husband, to see them get hurt, and to lose a son... As he observed her, he thought that, if he could take even a small part of that grief from her, then it would be worth any effort in the world ( ... )

Molly stared at her son and wondered why she hadn't noticed the guilt in his eyes before now. He'd always taken his role as the older brother so seriously, even as a child, and she could only imagine how much it hurt him to not be there to protect Fred ( ... )

"Mum, I-" Charlie sighed and stood up from his chair. Walking to where his mum was sitting, he leant forward and put his arms around her shoulders, giving her a small hug. "I didn't mean to make you cry again, I'm sorry, " he simply said, not really keen on the idea of further discussing his feelings about that, now that he had said what he had wanted to.

There were a thousand thoughts running through his mind at the moment, but he didn't really trust himself to be able to remain strong and not to break down if he shared them with her, and he didn't want to make her worry even more. "I'm here now, I promise I won't leave you all again, mum. Even -" he stopped abruptly, then grinned. "Even if you keep threatening me about my hair, which is completely fine as it is."
