Charlie couldn't help noticing the sadness in his mum's eyes, even as she smiled at him. It was hard for him to deal with everything that had happened, but he could only imagine how it had felt like for her, a mother, to worry constantly about her children and her husband, to see them get hurt, and to lose a son... As he observed her, he thought that, if he could take even a small part of that grief from her, then it would be worth any effort in the world.

"I will be visiting some places next week," he replied. "And I think I'd like to use some of that furniture, thanks! I left most of my stuff in Romania, not that I had that much to begin with, you know." He smiled dreamily at the memory of the small house he had shared with five other dragon keepers back there. Jurgen had been a bit too haughty, Alec a bit too messy, Ivan a bit too noisy, Herman a bit too shy, and Yuri had certainly been too opinionated, but Charlie would miss them all. For the past seven years, they had been like a second family to him. But he had now accepted that his responsibilities were here, as was his heart. "It won't be easy, I suppose," he admitted. "But I mean, I'm so awesome that I can understand them wanting to get advice from me - especially culinary, I must say!" He laughed softly. "Good thing they generally go to Bill first, right, mum?"

He paused for a moment, his smile leaving his face all of a sudden. There was something he had meant to tell her for a while now, but he had never known how to; he had never really been that good with that kind of things. But he figured that now, perhaps, was the good time... It probably sounded a bit ridiculous, but it had become important to him. "Mum," he started at last, running a nervous hand in his hair. "Look, I... I'm sorry for not being there when -" his voice broke a little. "- when all those things happened. I should have come back sooner, I'm sorry."
