“I’ll be home late tonight, mum!” Su shouted back into the house, her bag in one hand as she grabbed a pinch of floo powder with the other. A flash of green flames later, she was stepping out of the fireplace at the Leaky Cauldron, chirping a bright ‘morning!’ to Tom as she passed through the room, out the back, and then into the Alley proper.
Even if she hadn’t known that is was September first, she would have been able to guess that was the date from the crowd. Young witches and wizards were dragging their parents around, Hogwarts letters clutched in their hands and their eyes shining with excitement over shopping for school supplies for the first time. Su could even tell who the Muggle-borns were, feeling sympathy for their lost, though wondering, expressions.
It was odd, to not be shopping for supplies along with the crowd, especially after receiving the letter about sitting the N.E.W.T.s. She felt as if she should be worrying about another school year, and not about what to do with the rest of her life. That in itself was a bit daunting; she was just starting to put things back together after the war and what the wizarding world had gone through. Even with a good idea of what she wanted to do, how could she make a decision like that now?
She didn't feel like an adult yet, oddly enough. That, perhaps, was the problem.
Clearing her mind -- she needed to not be brooding at work -- Su came up to the the door of her work place. The tiny café was almost like a third home, the first two being her mother's flat and Hogwarts.
Hogwarts. There was something else to not brood on. It broke her heart to see the castle in such a sad state.
The bells above the café’s door jingled happily as she finally pushed it open, and she called a hello to Clytemnestra, the owner of the place. The warm, inviting smell of strong, black coffee already brewing and freshly baked goods quickly set her mood right again, helping her stop dwelling on the war and Hogwarts for the moment. Tying her apron around her waist, Su hummed as she made herself a cup of tea, taking a moment to nibble on one of the muffins offered for breakfast. One of the good things about working at a café was Cly not minding if she nabbed a muffin or two during her morning shifts.
Su had just finished eating when the bells jingled again, signaling the arrival of a customer.
"Good morning!"
