Fiction: "The Ground Beneath Her Feet", by Salman Rushdie. Kind of a strange alternate-history rock-and-roll love story.
Non-fiction (mostly): "Up in the Old Hotel", by Joseph Mitchell. Stories about early 20th-century New York.
Mystery: "The Janissary Tree", by Jason Goodwin. Hard-boiled murder mystery set in a beautifully described 19th-century Ottoman Empire.
Fantasy: Recently re-read T.E. White's "The Once and Future King", which I hadn't read in many years, and was pleasantly surprised at how well it held up. Books often change if you revisit them when you're older and (hopefully) wiser; this one was just as bittersweet and well-constructed as I remembered. (Pity they had to go assemble and publish an alternate ending to the novel after he died, though; don't ever read that part, it's rubbish.)
