Real refugees? ARSEHOLE!

Oct 23, 2006 08:25

I was reading an article on www.news.com.au today. It was sort of a commemorative article about the Hungarian uprising of 1956. I don't know much about it, so I thought it would be interesting.

However, when I got to a certain part, I was appalled. (Italics are mine).

And, in another macabre way, Australia benefited from the Hungarian tragedy. ( Read more... )

But... but... the Hungarians were white...

Seriously, what an asshole. I get my Australian news from Green Left Weekly and whilst it's not perfect things like this make me feel spoiled.

Green Left Weekly... is that online? I may have to check it out.

Yeah... he's a arse, alright. I was looking at the comments the story received from the public, and happily, not one of them is complimentary about the writer, or what he said. A couple of other people also picked up on the 'real refugees' comment. The only positive comments were about Hungarians, not about this twit. Grrr.

There's a little too much "we love cuba" for my liking, butif you do a search on "immigration", you'll see the difference.

id say anyone willing to get into a tiny leaky boat with their children and travel for weeks in the ocean in the *hopes* of even spending some time in our shoddy detention centres are running from something bad.
how silly to suggest they are not real regugees.
i dont think its right to assume he just means they arnt white though.
maybe he just doesnt see their situations as similar.

Hmmm... fair enough. That was an assumption made in the heat of the moment, when I was peeved about the 'we had real refugees in those days' line. It may not be a race based discrimination ( ... )

i really have no idea what he means
hes either extremely racist or extremely uninformed

either way someone in his position shouldnt be making such arrogant comments.
personally i think where you are born comes down to nothing more then pure luck, imagine if you were born in cuba or iraq or serbia?, so i believe everyone should be given the opportunity to move to a country of better opportunity. sadly, i guess, if you were realistic, out country reallly couldnt take *everyone* who wants to come here, no matter what their hardships.

Yup, I agree that you basically have no control over where you're born... although my personal belief system suggests that it's not luck, but carefully planned out, so that your soul can learn the lessons it's supposed to in this lifetime. Like, you would experience things so differently, living in Iraq, as opposed to Australia, and therefore, your soul would learn different things. That's just my personal beliefs coming into play there though ( ... )

Yeah... I'm not sure what how to take his comment... it definitely seems inflammatory, and derogatory. Even if he meant it in a different way, he didn't express himself very well ( ... )
