hold on, $250k is doing hella well and at that level people can totally afford to pay more in taxes than me in the $50k range. i don't understand why paying taxes is a bad thing? surely it is patriotic to support your country and be willing to pay what you can for the privilege of living here? if people don't want to pay taxes, kick 'em out. good luck finding a better deal elsewhere. i am happy to pay what i can so that this country can have roads resurfaced, children in better schools and hopefully sometime universal healthcare...this country needs a bit more socialism and a little less selfishness. yeah, i'll pay for schools, i have no kids, but i think education is important to the country, thats why i am happy to pay taxes. sorry, but you will never convince me that "mine, all mine" is a good way to behave.

However, in terms of managing our budget, deficit and current recession there's another side to the argument: spending. It's basic economics. You either have to raise more money or spend less of what you're taking in. Corporations do this all the time, and when faced with lower profits they'll cut expenses. The problem when translating that into a government is that spending = power, and a reduction of spending is akin to giving up power which few politicians will ever agree to ( ... )
