Signal Boost: Disability, Access and Fandom Cons

I love going to Vividcon (an annual fan vid convention set in Chicago). It's really the only con that I feel comfortable at, because it's small (I have some amount of social anxiety around extremely large groups of people) and because I already knew (online) some of the people there when I went my first time and have been able to slowly grow my ( Read more... )

Following this has been interesting and depressing. I like the way the con organizers have responded -- obviously I hope they follow through and improve the accessibility of the con, but at the very least I'm glad they took the criticisms to heart and apologized for the general attitude of the statement. They seem to genuinely want to improve it.

Some of the reaction from other vidders I respect (at least, I admire their work like crazy) has been really upsetting.

Everyone makes mistakes. I know the woman who wrote the policy personally. I know she feels bad about it. She's probably one of the most kind and open-minded women I've ever met. She had good intentions, and really didn't see the implications until it was too late.

This is the first time I've even seen a policy on accessibility in any convention. I guess, because she had to write it without any model, errors were bound to happen.

I'm not excusing her. She already apologized for it. We'll see what happens from here.

I fully believe that she wrote it with good intentions and I'm very happy that the concom is being open to discourse. They got the chance to look at other policies as a result of all the discussion going on, which is a good thing and can help them rework what they have.

I assume you know talitha78? She's going to do some tours of the city again this year, you should consider joining her. She's very sweet and has similar feelings about massive crowds.
