Signal Boost: Disability, Access and Fandom Cons

Jul 02, 2010 01:13

I love going to Vividcon (an annual fan vid convention set in Chicago). It's really the only con that I feel comfortable at, because it's small (I have some amount of social anxiety around extremely large groups of people) and because I already knew (online) some of the people there when I went my first time and have been able to slowly grow my circle of 'knowns'.

VVC screwed up on their recently posted policy about the con, in particular, the parts of the policy that focused on disability. I love VVC, but that doesn't mean that it can't be improved. And that doesn't mean that the people who run it can't screw up.

This post, by vom-marlowe, was one that was pointed out to me that I've found the most helpful so far, though I'm still reading a lot of stuff on this right now: Disability, fandom, and me: Here's your place, live in it, or the VVC storm

I have loved going to VVC, so much. But one of the reasons that I love it is because I feel welcome there. A group of fans was made to feel like they weren't wanted at VVC and that they would not be welcomed if they came and I believe that it is wrong to do that to them. The policies hurt them.

I'm very glad that the concom of VVC is reworking the policies and I hope that means more than just reworking the wording.
