I really do think this should go without saying, but I'm going to say it anyway, just in case ( Read more... )

Yes. Yes to everything you said. I can't--I'm kind of wibbly and fragile because I have to defend on Wednesday and that always makes me want to disappear, but this? This makes me furious and heartbroken and, just.

I haven't had an abortion, but my ex has, and she said (she's okay with my talking about it to other people, for the record--she's also a medical student and opted to train to give them) the worst thing about it was the way so many people decided they had the right to judge her for it, like they had the right to determine whether her reasons were good enough.

*holds out arms* Hugs, okay? It doesn't help, but fuck, we need them.

*hugs you a lot* Thank you so much for sharing this, Bunny. I think far too many people don't realize the human cost of this, don't realize that this isn't an issue that just faces the inhuman monsters anti-abortion activists paint. It's us, our mothers and our sisters and our daughters and our friends, women in bad situations who are having one more legal option about their own bodies torn away from them. And stories like yours are the only ones that will help people realize it.

I will confess that I was somewhat iffy about late-term abortions in the past -- not in the kind of way that would EVER support something like Dr. Tiller's murder...what part of "pro-life" justifies TAKING life??? -- but in hearing about it more I think a lot of people's opposition to it (including my own misgivings) are based purely on rhetoric and not on real-life cases. And that's bullshit.

The culture wars in this country are so strong that it's hard for anyone on either side to really see past their knee-jerk reactions on so many issues.
