Jonghyun’s eyes snapped open sharply. He was still cuddled up against Jinki. He shifted a little and Jinki peered down at him.

“Hey. Are you awake?”

Jonghyun didn’t answer. He was still floating on the surface of waking, trying to make sense of the dream he had. Jinki noticed how pale he looked.

“Are you okay?” Jonghyun nodded his head slowly in response, but Jinki didn’t buy it. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

Jonghyun sat up straight and turned around to face Jinki. “Jinki-hyung, do you think… that the others are doing alright?”

“Oh…” A look of relief mixed with concern swept across Jinki’s face, replacing his previous one of worry. “I’m sure they are, Jjong,” he said, even though he wasn’t sure himself. “Why?”

Jonghyun flushed a little at the pet name. “Nothing… It’s just that. I had a bad dream about them.”

“Oh… Well, it’s just a bad dream, right? We went through a lot and… I’m sure they’re doing just fine,” Jinki said, smiling and reaching out to tap Jonghyun’s shoulders.

“No,” said Jonghyun, grabbing Jinki’s hand and taking it away from his shoulders. “You don’t understand…” Jinki gave him a confused look before he continued. “Hyung, there’s something I haven’t told you about…”

Jonghyun hesitated. He avoided Jinki’s eyes before continuing, “I have these dreams… And they always have a common theme. Like,” he struggled to find the right words, to put his message across, “there’s always killing. And it’s not like murdering bad people. It’s always… the people you care about the most that kills you. Or you’re the one to kill them. And they are actually willing to be killed by you.” He looked up nervously at Jinki.

Jinki seemed to ponder about it a little. “Okay… I’m listening. Go on.”

“And so… I dreamt that Kibum was strangling Minho. And Minho was willing. He’d wanted Kibum to kill him.” Jinki was listening intently. “And hyung. I’ve had a similar dream… with you and me. I was choking you to death. And I didn’t want to, but you were encouraging me to do it.”

Jinki kept silent. The silence enveloped them for a while. Jonghyun decided to finish what he had started, keeping his voice low.

“I had that dream even before we came to Japan. It was horrible, so I didn’t tell anyone about it. Now that we’re here, bits and pieces of that dream starts coming back. I start to remember a few things from it. I remember there were priests… there was chanting… and also tapping of staffs… as we are… you know, as I was choking you.” Jonghyun looked up at Jinki to see that he was looking down too, studying the floor.

“And - and in that dream just now, it was exactly the same. Priests were chanting as Kibum killed Minho.” Jonghyun swallowed as he finished. “…Jinki-hyung,” Jonghyun watched as Jinki slowly brought his head up to look at him. He has a nervous look on his face. “The priest ghosts here kept attacking you. I got really, REALLY scared.”

Jinki studied his face. “Come here,” said Jinki, motioning for Jonghyun to come closer. Jonghyun did so and Jinki put his arms around him, rubbing Jonghyun’s arm comfortingly. Jonghyun leaned his head on Jinki’s shoulder and they sat huddling together like that.

Jonghyun sighed. “I mean, what do all these mean? What’s going to happen to us?”

“I don’t know, Jjong. I don’t know.”

-

After calming themselves down in the sacred room, they looked around the room for more clues. What they had found made them even more determined to get out of the mansion than ever. Jinki had found torn pages from the American folklorist’s journal. It was an entry regarding a ritual that was performed in the mansion once every ten years.

“In order to appease the spirits of the anguished dead in the Demon’s Mouth, love has to be sacrificed and surrendered. The strong spiritual energy released when the sacrifice is made is able to appease the spirits, thus preventing the occurrence of the Penitence.”

“The Penitence. When the Penitence occurs, the negative spirits will be unleashed into the world, covering the mansion in darkness and wiping the inhabitants off the faces of the earth. No trace or proof of their existence will be left.”

“How the ritual is performed. The chosen lovers will be secluded from everyone in a special part of the mansion for a period of six months prior to the sacrifice. Within this timeframe, they are expected to develop an even deeper love towards each other, and to harbour hateful, vengeful thoughts towards the rest of the world. These strong feelings bring about greater success in the ritual, appeasing the spirits more.”

“How the lovers are chosen. In every generation, usually with a span of approximately ten years, the High Priest shall make the decision himself, based on what he observed in the youths amongst the mansion occupants - ”

“- Jinki-hyung. Stop.”

Jinki looked up from the pieces of paper he was reading and translating from. Jonghyun was staring at the floor. Jinki bit his lip nervously.

“I don’t want to listen anymore, hyung. It’s too much. It’s ridiculous,” Jonghyun said, trying to blink back tears.

“I know, Jjong. But we have to know what’s going on here. What the ghosts want with us. So that we can leave this place.”

Jonghyun wiped at his eyes. He looked up into Jinki’s eyes. “But what the hell is this, with rituals and sacrifices and spirits?!”

Jinki averted his gaze away from Jonghyun. “I don’t know… But isn’t this always the case, when ghosts show themselves to humans? …They just have something to say… or prove.”

Jonghyun’s forehead creased as he rolled the idea around in his head. After a few moments he said, “You watch too many horror stories, hyung.” Then he gave a loud defeated sigh. “But I guess you’re right.”

Jinki brought his eyes up again at Jonghyun. Jonghyun gave him a small nod and motioned for him to continue reading.

-

Jonghyun shivered involuntarily. Things were getting too creepy for his liking. The dreams, the encounters, the rituals… As much as he wanted to be brave and appear unaffected by them, they were undoubtedly too creepy for him to handle. His dreams were trying to tell him something, he was sure of it, he just doesn’t know WHAT exactly.

Just then, Jonghyun saw the translucent white flash of another ghost. He seemed to be standing by himself in a corner, playing with something in his hands. Jonghyun could faintly hear him mumbling to himself. He reached his hand out to the back, grasping Jinki’s wrist, glancing back for a moment to motion for him to keep hush.

The two inched closer and closer.

“Nii-san… Dooshite?”

Jonghyun crept closer. He saw that the ghost was talking to an oversized stuffed doll. He brought his eyes up to the ghost’s face and was immediately taken aback. He gasped loudly, clasping his hand over his mouth and stepping backwards into Jinki. Jinki looked up at the ghost too.

“T-Taemin…?!” Jinki stammered.

The ghost turned his head sharply towards them, eyes boring into them from under his long dark bangs. The two boys stared back, stunned and speechless. Jonghyun was dumbstruck. It was Taemin. The Taemin from his nightmare. Sunken eyes and pale, taut, thin face. Jonghyun was reminded of the events in his dream. Kibum choking Minho. Rows of veiled priests stamping their staffs and chanting. Taemin’s crushed expression. Kibum’s blank look. Minho’s lifeless body. He blinked hard to shake the images off, but he couldn’t.

The ghost glared back at them, eyes dark and menacing.

“Acchi he ike! HOTTOI TE KURE!” he screamed in their faces. And then he vanished.

-

Jonghyun’s heart was palpitating fast in his chest. His head reeled. Just WHAT exactly is going on here?! he screamed in his mind. Jinki was holding his hand tightly and following him close behind. He noticed that Jinki’s hand was sweaty, and was trembling slightly. Jonghyun threaded his fingers with Jinki’s before giving it a tight squeeze of reassurance.

“I dreamt of the exact same Taemin, hyung,” Jonghyun whispered. “This is fucking messing with my head right now. I hope he’s not the same Taemin we know. I hope he’s doing fine back… wherever, along with Kibum and Minho.” Jonghyun gave Jinki’s hand another squeeze and kept it there.

They were approaching a corner, and Jonghyun made to round it when he came face to face with something pale white. Jonghyun swore under his breath as he felt his heart leaving his chest. He focused his eyes to look at the ghoul in front of him, and swore again, louder this time. His hand made to grasp blindly at Jinki who was next to him.

“J-Jinki hyung.” Jonghyun muttered, shaking Jinki’s shoulders roughly for him to look at what he was seeing. Jinki could see pretty clearly for himself, though.

“Jjong. …Shit. I don’t feel so good.” Jinki muttered a reply.

The ghost in front of them cocked his head, observing the two boys. He has smooth, porcelain skin, sharp cat-like eyes, tall nose, high cheekbones and pouty bow-shaped lips. He looked like Kibum. The two boys couldn’t believe their eyes.

The Kibum-ghost narrowed his eyes at them. “Anatatachiha naze mada koko desuka? Anatatachiga nokosi te iru. IMASUGU! Karera ha anatatachiwo mitukeru mae ni!!”

The ghost started waving them off in the opposite direction in annoyance. Jonghyun and Jinki were puzzled. They couldn’t understand a single Japanese word the Kibum-ghost was spouting. And surprisingly, he was not… attacking them?

“Kajou-san… Tadayoshi-san…”

Jonghyun and Jinki started. They looked around them anxiously, trying to find the source of the deep booming voice. The ghost’s eyes widened. He went ahead, past the two terrified boys. He stopped at an old wooden door.

He looked back at the two boys. “Kotchi kotchi!” he called desperately, gesturing at the door. The two boys exchanged confused glances, uncertain. Right then they heard tapping sounds and chanting, barely audible.

“Kajou-san… Tadayoshi-san…”

“HAYAKU!” The two boys jumped at the sudden rise in the ghost’s voice. They scrambled wildly for the door and entered the room behind it. The ghost followed behind and shut the door. Jinki and Jonghyun were clutching at each other and cowering, unsure whether to be more afraid of the booming voice and constant chanting, or the uncannily ‘friendly’ ghost who was an exact clone of Kibum.

-

Jonghyun and Jinki sat frozen on the cold wooden floor, holding on to each other. Their eyes were fixed on the translucent white being in front of them who was pacing the floor. The ghost was talking to himself.

“Hyung,” Jonghyun whispered cautiously. “Do you understand what he’s saying?” Jinki shook his head slowly from side to side in reply.

The ghost turned to them sharply and was mere inches away from their faces in an instant. Jinki drew in a sharp breath. He could feel the coldness emanating from the being in front of him.

“Who are you? …How did you get here?” The ghost questioned in a curt voice, in English.

“Lee Jinki.” Jinki gestured a hand to himself. “Kim Jonghyun,” he added, gesturing to Jonghyun.

The ghost frowned and backed away. “Leave. Do not get caught. If you do, it’s over.”

And just like that the ghost disappeared into thin air.

A/N: This story feels rushed. Is it rushed? D: I don't want to drag it too long, or I'm afraid I'll get lazy to finish this. To those who don't know Japanese, sorry! Well the two boys don't understand it either~! >.< And to those who do, sorry for the FAIL.
